By Ruth Smith NEWS. Christmas Around the World will be the theme of the annual grade school play which will be held December 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the South Rich Auditorium. Six classes, two kindergartens, two first grades, and two second grades, will represent six countries: Germany, Sweden, British Isles, America, Mexico, Slides from each and Australia. country will depict Christmas traditions. Many traditional Christmas songs will be sung. A guest artist from Salt Lake City will play I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day on bagpipes. The highlight of the evening will be Silent Night sung in Japanese at the end of the program by the six classes. Prelude and postlude music will be performed by fifth and sixth grade children on recorders and ukuleles. Calvin Ward, second grade teacher, is the director of the play this year. One of the first grade teachers said that this program has been very educational. The students and teachers have learned a great deal about countries around the fathers spend reading to their children. Many theorists believe that there would be fewer remedial reading problems among boys if fathers took a more active role in a home reading program. Books are also helpful in meeting the needs of children. Death, a fearful situation, dealing with a handicap, and other subjects are explained quite clearly in some childrens books. Through reading such books children learn to cope with difficult problems that they encounter in life. Livingston also spoke about the danger of letting children watch too much television. She suggested that one night a week the TV be turned off and the family do something fun together. Or maybe a reading hour could be instituted with the entire family participation. Build some memories with your children, challenged Livingston. Resolve to read to them 15 minutes each day. Nancy Livingston, a specialist on reading from the Utah Board of Education, spoke to a small group of parents at a general PTA meeting Thursday, December first. The topic of her lecture was How to Choose Books For Your Children. Livingston began her lecture by summarizing some thoughts by Dr. Elliot Landau.
