Show 12 1985. 30, May Nick Drake , Sports Editor I Stefanie Bunn Walters Volleyball Jeannie Morgan Tennis Staci England Athlete of the Year Kristine Garrard Basketball Felicia Condie Gymnastics Lisa Burgoyne Cross County Lori Lawson Volleyball Tooele (cross country), Jeanne White-hous- e (track and field), Felicia Condie (gymnastics) and Mickie Winn and Jeannie Morgan (tennis) were this seasons award winners. Every year as June approaches and the school year nears end, the coaches of women sports at Tooele High hand out awards to the most valuable and instrumental players. Tooele has been known as one of the top schools in womens sports and this year has been no exception. The Buff volleyball squad won the first region title in the history of the sport at Tooele with a remarkable 16-- 3 mark. The girls tennis team took second in the region standings and placed four players in the state Kris Holt was awarded most valuable swimmer earlier in the year. Top Athlete England excells in the classroom as well as on the court. The senior was a main contributor on the region winning volleyball squad. She proved consistent game-iand and good all around front game-ou- t and back row. In basketball, although not as much natural ability, hard work and dedication helped earn her the captain and leader. The senior also as an performer for the n tournament. The ladies garnered a second in the region swimming championships, just 10 points out of first, and qualified 15 girls for the state finals where they finished seventh. The gymnastics team broke a few school scoring records this season and continue to improve. The cross country was competitive in every meet as was this springs cinder squad. The basketball team finished in third place in the region standings and as usual, qualified for state. Listed below are some of the individuals and their accomplishseament throughout the 1984-8- multi-talente- Lady thinclads. 8 Rookie Of The Year Lewis, like England, is another top performer. The Buff freshman won a spot on the number one doubles squad on the tennis team. Head coach N.G. Hale attributes her quickness, aggressiveness and coachability some of her many attributes. The slender Buff also placed high in gymnastics, competing in four events in compulsory routines. She garnered two thirds along with a fifth in the home meet. Head coach Gonzales figures on 5 basketball and track while Sheri Lewis garnered the "Rookie of the Year" honors for her results in tennis, gymnastics and track. As for "outstanding players, Lori Lawson and Stefanie Bunn Walters (volleyball), Kristine Garrard (basketball), Lisa Burgoyne Com England placed in events like the javelin, shotput, discus as well as running in the hurdles, high jump and long jump. This year she threw a personal best in the javelin of 100-- at region and qualified for state. England also sports a 3.8 GPA in the classroom. son. Buff senior Staci England was Tooeles "Athlete of the Year for her instrumental play in volleyball, Mi d all-arou- se Jeanne Whitehouse Track and Field three more solid years from this and coachable sparkling personality. Head cinder coach Workman plans on a bright future ever every spring from this freshman. She was a pleasant surprise winning every high jump event until a broken foot dashed the youngster's region title hopes. She also participated in the long jump, 100 meter and the 400 meter relay, and placed seventh at the BYU Invitational. Volleyball Lawson was the captain and leader of the region title winning volleyball team. She is the most talented volleyball player head coach Susan Rydalch has ever coached. The talented senior rapped out 93 percent of her serves, 60 kills, knocked down 38 blocks, averaged 91 percent in receiving and 95 percent in setting. She also has the ability to hit right or left handed and was one of the most consistent players on the 16-- 3 Buff squad. Lawson has been recruited by Utah State and Snow College for volleyball. Walters is another senior that played with consistency for the Lady Buffs in volleyball. She participated in volleyball for four consecutive seasons and three years in basketball and track. She served at a 91 percent clip, and also averaged receving at 91 percent. Rydalch attributed her success to hustle and defense on the back row. She also leaps and blocks with great success and received the "Athlete of the Year award as a sophomore. Basketball Garrard, the tallest Lady Buff became a pleasant surprise to Rydalch. Over the past two years, this senior was the most improved player and played a big part in aiding Tooele to a third place in the region standings. She led the team in blocked shots (14), rebounds (198), free throws and total points (279). Also tossed in free throws at a 72 percent clip annd field goals at 43 percent. Rydalch attributes her success to hard work and dedication. Cross Country Burgoyne is another consistent performer for Tooele High School sports every year. She won the region cross country titlle and placed seventh at state. Last year she won the cross country state crown. In track, the THS junior captured her third straight 3200 meter crown and placed third in the 1600 meter run. She set two region records this year in the 3200 and 1600 meter run and was third in the 800 meter run at region. Track Whitehouse is another cinder star for the Lady Buffs. The junior broke her own school javelin record six times this season. She set a new school record of 121-- at region, capturing her second conse6 cutive javelin region title and placed third in the discus, and set a personal best at region. She also lettered in basketball and volleyball. Gymnastics Condie was one of two seniors on the young gymnastics team and was the most consistent performer for the Lady Buffs this season. She placed at region and qualified for state with a score of 8.8. Her best outing of the season came in the Buffs lone home meet when she captured first place on the beam, floor and vault and a second on the bars. Tennis Winn was the tennis teams number one singles player and qualified for state. Hale credits her service, baseline groundstrokes and consistency as the strengths that kept her at first singles all season long. Recorded a mark 5-- 5 and is very coachable. Morgan played right behind Winn at second singles all season. Hale stated she was the hardest worker on the squad, has the best overhead smash, approach shot and mark in volley. She recorded a region. 6-- 4 Grantsville Tennis Leagues Set Deadline -- Registration for summer tennis leagues in Grantsville is coming to a close. FERS G7 Deadline for the Little and Junior Leagues will be June 2. Head coach Don Wayne Nelson asks everyone interested please contact him before the deadline on Sunday. For those who do sign-uhelp will be needed in transporting players to their meet.
