Show Thefts And Vandalism Baffle Grantsville Police The recent rash of thefts, burg- laries and vandalism has the Grantsville City Police Department baffled and scrambling for leads. . Over the Memorial Day week- end, the Grantsville Elementary School and Senior Citizens Center were broken into and approximately $100 from each building was swiped. Chief Maycock said they have no leads to the burglaries but feel they are connected. Last weeks vandalism on Grantsville City vehicles is also still under investigation but the one lead the department received fell through at the beginning of the week. Chief Maycock said that due to understaffing, his department is searching for any kind of lead or clue to help them bust open the vandalism and theft cases. But he notes the Grantsville community might have to come forth with some information. City, are the citizens themselves. And until we get some help from the community its going to continue and next time it might be their property that is vandalized. "I wish someone would just call, Chief Maycock added. "I really believe somebody in this community knows who has done it and I feel they know where our equipment is but we are not getting any help. No matter how trivial the information they have, we would appreciate any kind. It could break this thing wide open. Grantsville City is offering a $1,500 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those vandalizing Grantsville City vehicles last week. More than half this increase resulted from higher defense expenditures made in the state by the federal government. Total federal expenditures in Utah for grants to state and local units, federal salaries and wages, payments to individuals, procurement contracts, grants, subsidies, etc., amounted to $4,839,941,000 or $2,930 per capita in the 1984 fiscal year. By comparison, federal spending in Utah during fiscal 1983 totaled $4,111,535,000 or $2,540 per capita. Because of the increased spending for defense, per capita federal expenditures in Utah during 1984 came closer to the U.S. average than it has for a number of years. In fiscal 1984, the per capita federal expenditures in Utah was only 3 percent below the U.S. average of $3,022. In the previous year, the per capita federal expenditures in Utah was 13 percent under the U.S. average. Foundation analysts point out that the surge of federal spending in Utah last year reversed a downward trend that began in 1970. At that time, per capita federal spending in Utah was 23 percent above the U.S. average. Foundation analysts point out that the surge of federal spending in Utah last year reversed a downward trend that began in 1970. At that time, per capita federal spending in Utah was 23 percent above the U.S. average. As noted, this ratio declined steadily so that by 1983 the per capita federal expenditure in Utah was 13 percent below the average for the nation as a whole. A major reason for the shift in federal spending away from Utah during the 1970s and early 1980s, according to the Foundation, was the increased emphasis placed on social programs during this period. ment program where the county will receive $4000 for indigent medical assistance in 1984, the commission authorized Tooele Valley Hospitals insurance agent to secure malpractice policies.
