Show 14 Letters To The Editor 1984 Public Notices 15, Editor, It was with considerable interest I read the letter from four Bell employees which defended their company and struck out at Beehive with considerable vigor and enthusiasm how they saw things with respect to the issue of Beehive v. Bell service to the areas south of Tooele. Not for one minute would I quarrel with these fine men as to their dedication to service and doing their mob in the best way they know how. Nearly all Bell "working troops I have had occasion to work with down through the years have all exhibited the same traits that "independent telephone people do the providing of service first and foremost. However, its a long way from the board rooms of the various Bell companies to the working man in Tooele, and their lack of understanding about Bell policy, and that of managers who down through the years have abused the public trust granted to a monopoly company that has gotten Bell in trouble which cumulated the first of this year with the "break-u- p of the Bell system. There used to be over 20,000 telephone companies, but down through the years, they have been bankrupted, bought out, or merged. During the early days Bells guiding director, a gentleman by the name of Theodore Vail used all the rough tactics of robber barons to create a single company to serve the country. He came close to success until the government stepped in and negotiations were directed to what is called the Kingsbury agreement which permitted the sharing of revenues and knocking off the cut throat tactics Bell had used up to that time. Twice since the government had to knock some Bell heads together to get its management to stop violalaws of this tion of the country. The last was in 1974, when the Justice Department of the United States government, which represents the interests of the 200 million Americans, filed a broad indictment against Bell for eight counts alleging a conspiracy to obstruct others from engaging in business and violated the laws of the United States. For the next seven years, Bell lawyers fought the government which concluded their filing a brief asking that the case be tossed out of court. Judge Greene responded with a 100 page decision on September 8, 1981 in which he concluded that the government had shown that Bell had broken the law and denied Bells motion to dismiss. (524 F. anti-tru- 200-pag- st e Supp 1381) The degree of lawbreaking committed . . . was so bad that Bell agreed to break the company into eight smaller companies rather than go to trial where their specific misdeeds would be exposed for the world to see. That is rather heavy punishment to inflict on yourself but it is agreed it was one smart should be. The lives of three of our children have been greatly blessed by being in her classroom. We only wish that Mary Charles could be cloned so that all children could have the opportunity to have move by Bell management, which has abused the public trust granted to their monopoly in the telephone business. Since the break up of the Bell system, Bell telephone rates have Knock Bell Heads their lives enriched by such a teacher. As parents we have risen nationwide by 5 percent. Rates in Tooele have risen by more than that for local and long ' learned there is a great deal more to education than just facts and distance. the local And, for example company could have kept all the money from sale of telephones in place during 1983. Yet, there were tens of millions of dollars of telephones left in place which were not sold as of the end of the year! Those phones transferred to AT&T and the revenue from the was lost to the local company forever! Had management bene on the stick, they would have sold all those phones kept the revenue and you need not of had the massive rate increases asked for on January third of 1984 and granted shortly thereafter. As to the specific allegations about service to areas south of Tooele it should be noted our private line service is $12.50 per month which includes touch tone, customer controlled teleconferencing and other features Bell doesnt have anywhere provided at no extra cost to our customers. Bell gets $25 per month for lesser service at the South depot and Ophir. Another error in the letter from the Bell guys was their saying the State Public Service stopped the Bell service upgrade in 1982. This is not borne out by the record or the testimony on file with the Public Service Commission and in records of public meetings where Mr. Bruce Knight, a prominent Bell official, who ran the show for Bell in this area said they stopped because the Public Services "suspended the very high monthly rates Bell proposed to charge in these areas. Bell management then got mad and ordered construction halted to force the public to come to terms. Their avowed statements were that Bell would not continue construction until the people agreed to pay their rates. Remember my comments about and public responsiblity to use monopoly anti-tru- st power wisely. The people refused to be pushed around this way by the brass from Salt Lake and simply asked the State of Utah to investigate the matter and make decisions which would be in their best interest. This the State did in full compliance with law. Beehive was ordered to take over and provide the service. We did. Sour grapes guys? Arthur W. Brothers, President Beehive Telephone Co., Inc. Rush Valley, Utah Worth A Million Editor: We are writing to publicly give our sincere thanks to an outstanding teacher at East Elementary. She is one that has truly demonstrated what a quality teacher figures. Our childrens feeling of and confidence has been greatly enriched by being in Miss Charles classroom. She loves them for what they are and encourages them to become something better. We cant put a price tag on this type of a teacher. Its only disappointing to us to know that many who have the talents and abilities that Mary Charles has are not attracted to the teaching profession self-wort- h because of low pay. Again, may we say, many thanks to a great teacher and all the teachers at East Elementary. The effect youve had in our childrens lives is worth a million dollars to us. . These ditches were destroyed when Burmester Road was rebuilt. When asked what was to be done to help us one commissioner replied, "We have taken the matter under advisement and well dig the ditches as soon as equipment is available. This statement was made to me in December. Letters have been written, petitions have been signed, but as I write this on March 5, 1984 we are watching the water and waiting. Jannette Long Youth Response Editor: I would like to commend the two boys who were at McDonalds on March 5th and responded so promptly to my request for help when I saw an elderly gentleman fall into the ditch across the street and was unable to get up.
