Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon When medicine first started recognizing that the temporomandibular joint, (joint of the lower jaw) was a source of difficulty for their patients, it was called Joint Syndrome. All temporomandibular joint pain was placed in the category of TMJ synTempor-mandibul- drome. It has taken medicine many years to realize that this joint does have the same types of disorders as other joints in the body. It has disorders such as arthritis, tears of the ligament and cartilage, displacement of the joint and con- tents, fractures, ankylosis (bony growth closing the joint space and The "Non Earache preventing normal function of the joint) infections, swelling, tumors, degeneration of the bone, pain and tenderness with referred pain to the head, face, neck and muscles surrounding the joint. Causes of these disorders include injury (automobile accidents, falls, excessive opening of the jaws, blows to the jaws, etc.) stress, Osteolytic and Rheumatoid Arthritis, infections, clenching teeth and etc. In the event of an injury to the jaw or its joint, early treatment can save radical treatment later. Often measures that include ad- justments of the teeth, splints, medications, and forms of relaxation may take care of the problem. If early treatment is unsuccessful and pain, popping, headaches, and etc. continue after treatment, surgical treatment may be necessary. People with stress often clinch or grind their teeth over working the muscles of the jaw causing muscle strain and arthritis of the joint. Associated headaches, earaches, jaw, neck and facial pain are the result. The treatment is often relatively simple such as taking a very soft or liquid diet, avoiding excessive motion, opening and clenching, taking aspirin for the pain, and application of heat to the affected sym-tomat- areas.
