' More Flooding In Store For Wasatch Marshes More flooding is in store for marshes along the east side of the Great Salt Lake this spring as the lake level continues to rise and heavy spring runoff is predicted. Tim Provan, waterfowl biologist , for the Division of Wildlife says about four million v dollars in damage has already ' been done to the states waterfowl management areas along the Wasatch Front. He says the figure could go up to ten million if the lake level rises to the 4,208 foot level. According to Provan, the damage has been not only to the elaborate diking and canal system on the management areas (many of which have been completely destroyed or heavily silted), but also to emergent vegetation in the areas which has been killed by salt water incursion from the lake. Provan says waterfowl depend heavily on such vegetation for food and cover. "Farmington Bay has been about half destroyed, and we expect the other half to go this year," says Provan. He adds that almost one half of Ogden Bay was wiped out last spring, with much of the remaining marsh expected to be destroyed by July of 1984. The waterfowl managment specialist says the worst imaginable scenario would put the Great Salt Lake level at 4,210 feet, flooding outer marshes and eroding dikes at the Locomotive Springs Waterfowl Management Area at the north end of the lake, and damaging the Public Shooting Grounds Waterfowl Management Area in Box Elder County, which once was several miles from the lake. Provan says he also expects flooding at the Timpie Springs management area on the south end of the lake. Still, as in most stories, Provan says there is a bright side. While many northern Utah marshes have been hurt by flooding, others in central and southern Utah have benefitted from the additional water. The Clerk Lake Waterfowl Management Area, once a tiny desert waterhole south of Delta in Millard County, has become an excellent area for migrating waterfowl, offering hundreds of acres of marshland where desert reigned just a few years ago. Provan also says that, when the Great Salt Lake level finally subsides, the Division's waterfowl managers will start with a "clean sheet of paper." He says there may be new opportunities to rebuild the marshes so theyre even better than before. With enough time and enough money, Provan says future prospects are bright for waterfowl and waterfowl hunting in Utah. CLEANING CO.
