Roberts Sports Editor I Griffith and Alldredge Reign As Region Six Diving Champs Terrific Terry Griffith and magnificent Michelle Alldredge captured the Region Six diving championships at South High Wednesday in the opening round of the region swimming and diving cham- pionships. And to complete the Tooele domination of the springboard event, all seven Buff divers qualified for the state championships which will be held at BYU March In addition to Griffith both Jude Tranter and Dale Nielson by finishing fourth and fifth will advance to state as the divers earned 37 points in the chase for the team championship. Four Tooele girl divers competed in region and four Tooele girls earned their way to the state tournament. Alldredge finished a strong first to gain the championConnie Shields ship, earned a third place, freshman Karma Cook was fifth and junior Julie Belnap finished in sixth place. This quartet earned 47 points for the girls team. In the battle for the team CedarCity does not compete with the Region Six schools and must qualify its swimmers and divers according to individual finish. No Cedar City divers qualified for state. The team point standings following the diving are as follows: Girls 1 47 Tooele 2 Judge 26 3 Murray 16 Boys Tooele 37 18 2 West 3 Murray 9 4 4 South Griffith Repeats Griffith won the boys title with a score of 414.25, 68.40 points ahead of his nearest rival Jon Atzet of Judge Memorial who scored 345.85 points. At the end of four dives Griffiths score was 121.85 with 2-- cham-pionship- o, Atzet close behind with 120.30 points. Then on his fifth dive, a f back one and somersault Griffith scored 51.60 points, his highest mark of the day to spurt out in front and from here Griffth cruised home to the title. Griffiths championship was his second in a row and makes him a prime favorite to also repeat as the state diving champion. Even though Griffith was a winner by a comfortable margin, he wasnt at his best. 1 didn't get warmed up for my first few dives," Griffith said. "But after I got the one-hal- feel of things, everything worked out just fine." Freshman Jude Tranter missed third place and a medal by the slim margin of half a point. Tranter was cruising along in third place after' eight dives when he hit the board on his ninth dive scoring dl2.60 points and although he finished strong he didn't quite overtake Souths Mike Kubota who finished second, one half a point in front of Tooeles up and coming freshman Tranter. Dale Nielson got away to a poor start, scoring just 14.95 points on his first dive, but then recovered nicely and came on to score 278.35 points, finish in fifth palce and qualify for state. Coach Mel Roberts and his boy divers have completely dominated the Region Six diving since 1970 having won the region championship 13 out of 14 years, missing only in 1977. Kevin Woods won in 1970 and 71, Kirk Spencer was the champ in and 1974, Curtis Bateman was the winner in both 1975 and 1976, Rex Griffiths won the championship three consecutive years in 1978, 79 and 80, Scott Nelson won in 1981 and 1982, and Griffith wonhis second title, the winner in both 1983 and 1984. 1973 In blazing his way to the Another Title Terry Griffith successfully defended his Region Six diving title by outdistancing the 11 other challengers. By the . time the third quarter had ended, Dugway was on top In the fourth quarter, the lead kept swinging back and forth from team to team. The contest got really exciting down the home stretch. Dugway was up by one point ) with eight seconds to go. They also had possession of the ball, but had trouble killing off the remaining time. On an inbound pass from Monica Moe in route to Fiona McHardy, a foul was called. Fiona, shooting from the free throw line, attempted 45-4- With two seconds left on the possibly tie and maybe win the game. But Taylor, who hadnt scored a point all night failed to make her free throw attempt. Monica Moe, the teams leading rebounder for the season, came through with the clutch rebound, thus assuring the Mustangs of a 25-2- 45-4- 4 victory. The win upped the Mustang record to 10-- and most importantly, sent them on their way to the state tournament, which begins tonight in Green River. Hopefully on February 25, the Mustangs will be celebrating the state championship. By losing, Waynes season came to a close. And the loss dropped 5 36-3- 3. somersault, scoring only 20.70 points. Her bestdive was a back somersault scoring 31.90 points. 1 2 Diving For Gold Michelle Alldredge became the third girl diver in as many years to win the region diving title. She along with teammates Connie Shields, Karma Cook and Julie Belnap will tune up for the state championship meet at BYU on March 2 and 3. Karma Cook, a freshman, performed like a seasoned veteran as she battledher way to a fifth place finish, with a score of 273.10, and Tooeles fourth girl entrant, Julie Belnap, diving My common sense says no. Scoring for the Mustangs were Marianne Wilde, 18 points; Monica Moe, 13 points; Vicky Perkins, 8 points; Cathy Keetch, 4 points; and Fiona McHardy, 3 points. consistently throughout her entire program, finished in sixth place as all four Tooele divers qualified for state. Tooele girls divers have been VIDEO G region champions for the past five years. Michaela Buckley won in 80 and 91, Lori Roberts in 82, Kaelyn Keele in 83 and now sophomore Michelle Alldredge. The strong Tooele finishes accumulated 47 points for the Buff girls and 37 points for the boys. Girls Shine In the girls competition Tooeles Michelle Alldredge tangled with another diving artist, Cheryl Bylski of Judge. After three dives, Miss Bylski had forged a very narrow 79.55 to 78.25 lead voer the newly crowned champion.
