Show Fitness Tips by Dale Nelson, Utah State Uni-- . versity If you are one of the "older generation you may need more protein. At least that was indicted in a recent study involving men and women in their 70s. (The American Journal of Clinical . Nutrition 35:1982, 6) The participants were given the current Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein each day. The resulting tests showed that the older people were in negative nitrogen balance, meaning they were using more protein than was provided by the diet. Incidentally, that missing protein must come from the body protein sources such as skeletal muscle. Additionally, as people get old- er they tend to be less active, which adds to the loss of muscle tissue. The shrinking unused muscle must then give up protein which is processed by the body. Exercise, on the other hand, helps to maintain nitrogen balance and It Aint Powder Puff The girls at Tooele High School engaged in a game of football called "Powder Puff Wednesday afternoon. In spite of deficiencies in the precision aspect of modern day football the gals had themselves a ball. There was some fine running, a couple of passes completed, and some hard defensive hitting, lending credence to the fact that the name Powder Puff should be changed to something else. Both the participants and the goodly number of spectators who attended enjoyed themselves. Tooele Conservation Leader Elected To Lead State Sportsmen Mr. Gerald E. The UWF is comprised of more than 1,500 members, its structure includes an Executive Director, a Secretary, dards of sportsmanship; and strengthen farmer stockmen sportsmen understanding. . Mr. Gordon explained that he will strive to achieve a stronger legislative voice for Utahs sportsmen during his term as President. "With more than 200,000 Utah re- two Vice Presidents, and 19 Direc- tors. Mr. Gordon succeeds Mr. Sheldon Eppich of Clearfield. In addition to being noted as a Tooele County conservation lead- sidents purchasing hunting and fishing licenses annually (which contributes an estimated $200 er, Mr. Gordon served as the UWFs 1982 First Vice President. During 1981 Mr. Gordon served on the UWFs Board of Directors, representing the sportsmen in Tooele, Summit, and Salt Lake Counties and during that same period, Mr. Gordon also served on the UWFs Executive Committee. Mr. Gordon explained that the objectives of the UWF are: To en- courage protection and restoration of waters, wildlife, forest, and field;. tot safeguard public health, by eliminating stream and lake pollution; to discourage unwise drainage; to seek wise land and water use in the broad public interest; and to nurture and improve wildlife stocks as well as to rehabilitate and restore fish and wildlife environment; to seek more intensive education of the whole public, youth and adult, in the concept of resource conservation and multiple use as vital to our way of life, emphasizing the parallel between economic pros- perity and maintenance of adequate natural resources; to cooperate closely with County, State, Federal, and private agencies and owners of properties, toward the end that the greatest ' mil- lion to Utahs economy), the sportsmen deserve a much stronger voice concerning the issues relating to outdoor recreation, and the management of Utahs wildlife resources and habitat, stated Mr. Gordon. Mr. Gordon went on to explain that in the "good old days, all the ' sportemsn needed to be concerned about was hunting and fishing opening and closing dates and bag and creel limits. Today, the rampant exploration of our natural resources, coupled with the desires of the Reagan Administration to , put wildlife issues on the back burner in an attempt to demonstrate reduced government spending, local and national wildlife and conservation issues are much more complex. Issues such as improving wildlife habitat, obtaining minimum stream flows, and getting the total wildlife management business in Utah out of politics and totally under the jurisdiction of the wildlife managers are some of Mr. Gordons chief concerns. The national issue which is of primary concern to Mr. Gordon is the selling of public lands. This issue often called the "Sagebrush Rebellion, or "Privatization of Public Lands, or "Assets Management, all of which is Reagans at- tempt to destroy the concept of public lands ownership as we now know it under the Parks Service, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. Mr. Gordon stated that he has worked many projects with Federal land managers and has seen the results of those efforts and generally speaking, the Federal managers do an excellent job of managing the Federal lands. "Again, this is an area that we organized sportsmen must strive to get politics out of, so the managers can manage the resources they are charged to manage, stated Gordon. Mr. Gordon encourages every sportsperson in the State to endorse the objectives of the Federation and to support the Federation. The UWF has much to offer the sportsperson. Now in view of these current findings about nitrogen balance and protein intake in older people, it is gram to maintain muscle mass (protein).
