Show 16 Tooele Transcript, Thurs., Sept. 23, 1982 i Street Light Removal Proposed This map was presented to the city council last week to consider removing 46 street lights in Tooele. The council decided that it would rather hear from the public before making a final decision. The stars on the map indicate lights that are proposed to be removed and the triangles designate 12 others that could be removed as alternatives. Utah Symphony Appoints Concertmasters i The Utah Symphony has named Andres Cardenes, a winner in the recent Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, as concertmaster. Associate Concertmaster Kenneth Kuchler was promoted to the position of first associate concertmaster. Named to the newly created post of second asso- ciate concertmaster is Leonard Braus. At the age of 25, Andres Cardenes has claimed bronze medals in both the 1980 Sibelius International Violin Competition (the highest ever achieved by an American in that contest) and Moscow's 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition (the top honor accorded an American by this year's jury). He also won the title of Laureate as a finalist in Belgiums Queen Elizabeth International Violin Competition in 1980. A graduate of Indiana University, Mr. Cardenes studied with three luminaries of the international music community Josef Nathan MiLstein and Ivan Calamian. He has served on Indiana Universitys music faculty Gin-gol- d, and has been invited to conduct master classes in Finland, Denmark, Japan and Australia. His appearances on Belgium and Finnish television have reached music lovers in over 30 countries. Mr. Cardenes replaces William Preucil, who has accepted the concertmaster chair in the Atlanta Symphony for the 1982-8- 3 season. Kenneth Kuchler, who joined the Utah Symphony in 1941, assumed the position of of assistant concert-mastin 1948 and that of er i 4 associate concertmaster in 1977. During the 1980-8- 1 season he served as acting concertmaster. Mr. Kuchler also has a long-tim- e affiliation with Westminster College, where he has served as music department chairman and music program director. In 1979 the College conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Music degree. Leonard Braus also comes to the Utah Symphony from Indiana University, where he is nearing completion of a Master of Music degree in violin performance. Like Mr. Cardenes, he has studied with Josef Gingold and Ivan Ca- lamian, along with such other notable musicians as Tadeusz Wronskl and Franco Culli. Mr. Braus has soloed with numerous orchestras, including those of Cincinnati, Kansas City and Tulsa, and served for three years as concertmaster of the Tulsa Philharmonic. A finalist in numerous regional competitions, he was also a semifinalist in Genoas 1976 Paganini International Violin Competition. We are pleased to welcome as new members of the orchestra two such outstanding musicians as Andres Cardenes and Leonard Braus, said Music Director Varujan Kojian.
