Show Tooele Transcript, Thurs., Sept. 23, 1982 15 Autumn Is Good For Fishing Ilartt Wixom Decisions are becoming more difficult. Utahs upland bird season has shotgun-ner- s by Brian Coodell Brian Goodell, Swimming Star Has Done It All We would venture a guess that the highest accolade that can come to an amateur athlete would be earning a gold medal at the world Olympic Caines; being declared the best in his sport in the United States; setting a world record; or winning a national championship in either high school or college. If this assumption is true, then Brian Coodell has experienced them all and has a problem determining which of these accomplishments would rank at the top of his Thrills of a Lifetime. Goodell, who will conduct a two-dan swimming clinic in Salt Lake, Friday and Saturday achieved all of the above accomplishments. No, he didnt achieve them, Goodell exceeded them. He won not one, but two gold medals in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. That same year, as a senior in high school Coodell was selected as the US Mens Swimmer of the Year. At different times during his career he set five world records. Coodell has won not one, but 10 National championships. He still holds the national high school record in the 200 yard and 5(X) yard freestyle events, and he won nine NCAA individual titles three-sessio- while swimming for UCLA. This amazing athlete, Brian Goodell, will be the guest of Tooele swimming coach Mel Roberts Friday afternoon be- fore going to Salt Lake to present a swimming clinic for Utahs collegiate and high school swimmers and coaches. Younger age group swimmers and their coaches are also invited to attend the clinic. After establishing such an enviable record as a competitive swimmer, Coodell went on to work for Finals Swimming Suit company where he has earned the reputation of being an inspirational as well as a productive swimming instructor. Through the efforts of coach Roberts, and with the blessings of the Utah High School Activities Assn., Coodell has agreed to conduct this clinic. At first the clinic was planned to be held in Tooele but the intense interest shown throughout Utah dictated that it be moved to a more spacious location. The clinic will be conducted in the Cottonwood Heights swimming complex, 75(X) South 27(X) East, Salt Lake City. Members of the Swimming Coaches Assn, will be admitted free, fee is $10 and a special fee of $5 is being charged swimmers. .The first session is fur coaches, trainers and will begin at 7 and in the topics for Included p.m. Friday. discussion are: role of weight training, age group burnout, how to keep swimming fun, incentive, team spirit, racing strategy and a question and answer per- choosing between forest grouse, chukars, cottontails, sage hens in the foothill slopes, and Hungarian partridges in three northern counties plus western Wasatch. And elkers seek elusive bulls come Sept. 29. For wapiti permit holders, the secret is an old boy scout motto: be prepared! But the fishing can get very good about now on Strawberry Reservoir. I the time I interrupted grousing along Daniels Canyon to give Strawberry which I could see off in the sunshine a try with my spinning outfit. That third cast was one to stir anyones blood, with a leaping 3V4 pound rainbow which had to' be dug out of the moss every time he returned to the water. But it was only tip of the iceberg for hot fishing remainder of the fall. The farther temperatures dropped it seemed the better those oversized rainbows fed-u- p to a point. Water froze a week before Thanksgiving, but almost until then a lunker could be taken on lures, nymphs, and of course, bait. As for streams, some of those in Utah and Wyoming are especially kind now. A sunken fly will work in many of them. A large yellow pattern will entice trout on top where grasshoppers are still flitting. Recently I experimented with large artificials on Wyomings Green River and tributaries, catching one brook trout worth mentioning. A resplendent emerald green and crimson fish of some two pounds, it attacked the hopper with almost a crusading zeal to teach all careless hoppers a lesson. He had the legs of three such large insects in his mouth. Such fishing is likely to be good now on Wyomings Green, Utahs Weber, Provo, Logan, Blacksmith Fork, Duchesne. But lets look at the hunting scene again. Sage grouse are out of the picture, blue and ruffed grouse in. Blues get along fine with very little water, extracting it from conifer needles. They are therefore likely to be in the ranges such as Utahs Stansburys, Sheep-rockBook Cliffs. The ruffed, with black banded tail, is the other most likely grouse you will see in the lower aspen semi-dese- rt s, belt. There is not enough space here to advise elk hunters how to score. Its a massive challenge. Scout them out and allow enough time. ' mi" ' Angler contemplates fall fishing try on hungry trout in Wyomings Creen River. Ducks are fair game noon Oct. 2, with geese the week following. Better get out V qUPFHWINCH the waterfowl proclamation. Read it over carefully for limits and restrictions. Of course, wise waterfowlers will be out this week planning strategy, especially if blinds and decoys are involved. Veterans feel a large spread of phonies is better than a few, arranged in social settings of some four to six in bunches facing many directions. VVhile most gunners will hie to Utah and Creat Salt Lake, Uintah County lowlands and Cache to Juab sloughs, you might try someplace new for fast action. For example, there are Fish Creek 8000 Springs west of Vernon, Bicknell Bottoms in Wayne County (excellent for geese later in season), Strawberrys north $714 Lb. Winch M59 Plus Bumper Kit shoreline, portions of Creen and Duchesne Rivers, including the Flaming Corge country. The east Daggett Creen River has produced some h Canadian honker hunting, but scrutinize new 2500 lbs 149 194 3500 Lbs 294 1500 Lbs top-notc- rules on this one. There is plenty of season to bag a bottomland bunny. Watch for the snowshoe beginning to switch over to that white winter coat. He is found in the deer country, but it is not too early to begin scouting for this seasons muley. Jack rabbits, open anytime, also offer a very good opportunity to sight in on moving targets for later deer and elk quests. It is that pivotal time when you can choose many things. The major dilemma may be in deciding your top priority.
