Show Tooele Transcript, Thurs., Sept. 16, 1982 13 Abandoning The Band Wagon Of That Jazz Trade Rhetoric by Charlie Roberts I imagine I would gain more respect among my peers by writing that Iran should have kept the 52 Americans hostage rather than pen that the most recent Utah jazz trade was a positive step in the playoff direction. In case you have been roaming in Antarctics tundra for the past two weeks, the Jazz shuffled its first round pick, Dominique Wilkins, to Atlanta for John Drew, Freeman Williams and a couple of bucks - er, make that megabucks, alrout $1 million 1982 currency. From the media reaction, you would think Sam Battistone was a motivating factor behind a Ban Mothers Day Congressional bill. It started with a Salt Lake newspaper story declaring the Jazz traded One Dawg (as in Georgia Univesity Bulldog) for Two Dogs. And after that it has been pretty much a perpendicular slide down the Jazz scale of public relations. Massive Criticism r j -- r 4 ;,f gunners before they could phone a travel agent to book a flight to the City of Salt. So this was Utah the hot-sh- ut Friendly Beehive State. Bunk! Benedict Arnold had more friends at the Boston town square back in 1780 when he and Satan himself were hung side by side in effigy. ' For the next few minutes how about jumping off the band wagon of rhetoric that has been splashed across the sports pages and examine a different view of the Jazz trade? Ask Sam First of all, why not ask Battistone the purpose behind the trade. After all, there mast be some logic. Why hasnt anybody revealed the Jazz management side of the story, eh, Sam? Nobody has asked us why we made the trade, Battistone said in a Tuesday interview. Youre the first one to even bother. Battistone makes it clear that the decision to trade Wilkins was not a sudden idea. It was not off the cuff, nor an overnight decision, Battistone says. And we didnt do it strictly for money, or else we would have done it a long time ago, before the draft was even held. ' The Jazz owner feels that both Drew, a 7 forward, and Williams, a big, high 6-- ' f- i; l x L K t vf i D r I a- -'4 ''( w Within a week, all the Jazz beat reporters and daily newspaper sports editors were pecking out pages of anti-jaz- z copy faster than Wall Street could update the stock market. Battistone was hammered by the press harder than an apprentice carpenters first inspected nail. Frank Layden received more criticism than Richard Nixon on the eve of his resignation. And Drew and Williams were labeled ' John J.D. Drew scoring guard will be a benefit to the Jazz. Drew was with the Hawks for eight years and has averaged better than 20 points per game during that tenure. No Guarantee Theres no guarantee another prime example of a number three pick that fell on his nose. The only thing Marvin has been able to erase has been the hopes of his team being a consistent title contender. He has averaged less than nine points and nine rebounds per game. And that man is on the other side of seven feet. Tom Burleson is another jewel of a number three pick. After aiding his North Carolina State to the NCAA championship, the 73 Burleson was grabbed early in the 1974 draft pickings. He shot a pitiful 44 percetn from the field during a hobbling career and could only get into a season average double figures twice. Cartwright Overrated Most people out here in Utah would love to see Bill Cartwright, yet another third pick, strut out of a Jazz lockerrom 42 times a year. But forget it. Cartwrights stats glisten less than those of current Jazzmen Jeff Wilkins, Danny Schayes and Ben Poquette. Dominique would be scoring 21 points a game for as, Battistone says. In fact Darrell (Griffith) only averaged 20 points when he was rookie of the year. Before you start bemoaning the fact that Utah no logner has the third best player from this years draft, lets zoom in on the number three picks during the past 12 years. For starters you have Buck Williams, the man who should have been the rookie of the year. Then you have Kevin McIIale of Boston and one of the top forwards in the game Marques Johnson. But after that you have basically fair to lousy pro basketball players. Take the case of Ernie DiGregorio, the Olympic hero selected by the Buffalo (now San Diego) back in 1973. He was rookie of the year but two years later he couldnt even get a courtesy invitation n to a camp. D In History The great Emie D was history, and the compiled pages werent thick enough to swat a summer fly. Marvin The Eraser Webster is Seventh grade champions in flag football at the Tooele Jr. High School is this team. Front: Manager Brian Walker, James Rael, Captain Brian Heilman and manager Marty Rydalch. Back: Shane Greenland, David England, Kevin Connelly and Jason Chuculate. Team members absent when picture was taken were Brent Sass and Brian Staheli. The 71 Cartwright averages 20 points a game, but he blocks less than one shot per contest and his rebound average is below Adrian Dantley. Here are some of the high picks - first through fourth - that never came clsoe to their expectations in the NBA: LaRue Martin, David Meyers, Elmore Smith, Dwight Davis, Al Wood, Mike Green, Corky Calhoun and Ken Durrett. So just because Dominique was a number three pick, doesnt men that he was destined for stardom, nor would he be the key to turn around the franchise. Not The Doc And forget the about Dominique being the next Dr. J. Julius Erving is the next Dr. J. In fact he is the only Dr. J. If you dont believe me, ask Even my cotton-toppe- d he knows that he only guy who can make moves like the Doctor is Dr. J ' that i Upland Game Forecast The general outlook for the 1982-8- 3 cottontail season is improved over last years, whereas most grouse hunting will be down, especially forest grouse. It is felt Utahs late spring weather may have affected nesting success. Hunters seeking sage grouse this year are urged to check the proclamation for area changes. Sage grouse habitat has been lost to developments in several areas; areas closed this year that were open to hunting last year include Duchesne County south of Highway 40 and the Vemon area in Tooele rif-ra- ff d. himself. The Doc and Dominique are in County. Hungarian and chukar partridge hunting should about equal last years. Huns are down slightly in Box Elder County but good hunting and success is expected. Chukar hunting in Tooele County should be as good or better than last separate classes and time will determine whether Wilkins establishes himself in triple A ball or just another NBA employee with great potential, but . . . On the other hand, Drew is an established NBA man. Although few Utah fans are familiar with his feats. J. D. has played eight seasons virtually injury e and has lead free, is a his team into the playoffs four out of the past five years. The Jazz needs scoring help when Darrell Griffith is resting or (heaven forbid) injured. And Freeman Williams can provide that lift, as well as the three-poithreat when the situation arises. And concerning the $1 million check sighed by Ted Turner . . . Mn Battistone put it best, It opens up all kinds of am a ' ' SsT i: v,- I - V05 SHAMPOO Reg. $ 39 M.93 ,'ir 59 L. Although most hunting for these species is done on public land, there is the potential for hunting on, or crossing, private lands. Hunters are urged to respect the property of the landowner including fences, livestock, farm equipment and buildings. Each year landowners have problems with people using their land without permission, or with fences being damaged, gates left open or equipment being damaged. Often, during this time of year, animals are held in temporary pastures. TTiese range animals are easily spooked, and hunters in the area can create unnecessary disturbance to them. Each proclamation of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Wildlife Board contains the trespass law. In essence it states a person entering posted property must have permission of the owner or caretaker of the land. If that permission has not been obtained, the trespasser must leave upon request. A property is properly posted when No Trespassing signs andor a minimum of 100 square inches of fluorescent or bright yellow paint are displayed at all comers, and at all fishing streams that cross property lines, and along all roads, y enterand trails, gates and ing such land. The fluorescent or bright yellow paint must be on exterior fence-posand trees, or, when metal fence-posare ased, the entire exterior side mast be painted. Violators of the trespass law are guilty of a Class B misdemeanor.
