Tooele Golfers Capture Third Place In State Tournament Tooele completed the fall golf season in a blaze of glory finishing third in the Class 3A competition, with Paul Cluff, Tooeles lowest scorer qualifying as Finishing ahead of Tooeles score of 324 was Box Elder, 317, and Timpview capturing the title with a fine score of 306. "all-Stat- e. Even though Jordan failed to place among the top six teams, Steve Schneiter of Jordan was the low medalist for both the 4A and 3A teams. Paul Cluff, Tooele ace, fired a brilliant 78 over the Davis County course which was the fifth lowest score among all the 3A golfers. Tooele played in the state tournament just the way they played all year as they went through league play without a loss. Without a single outstanding individual star, and taking turns being medalists for Tooele, the four counting scores for the Buffs were bunched together. Cluff was low with his 78, with Steve Tate shooting an 80, Mike Mendenhall an 81 and Mike Griffith an 85. The 18-ho- low four scorers for the five golfers entered for each school count in the final standings. Duane Gillette, Tooeles fifth qualifer shot a 91. . Box Elder just had a little better day which was the difference between second and third place. I am not at all discouraged with the way they came through. Finishing third among the 3A schools and sixth among the 3A and 4A combined speaks well for our kids. Tooeles finish was the best for the Buffs since 1978 when they took second, after winning teh state championship in 1977. Tooele entered the state tourney as Region Six champions, the sixth time they have won the Region championship, the last five in succession. Grantsville has the fewest number of graduating seniors, six. They are Todd Valdez, Bret Anderson, John Flores, Curt Bracken, Gerald Nelson and Chris Hall. Tooele loses '15 via the graduation Wit-kows- route. They are, Chris Holland, Matt Palmer, Kirt Palmer, John Manchester, Steve Snow, Mark Duffin, Ron Weyland, Gary Coffman, Marty Edler, Tim OShaughnessy, Jack Cochrane, Ray Davis, Shawn Ashworth, Mike Jensen and Roger Stewart. It has been a long and frustrating season for the Tooele County schools, none of which have lived up to expectations. Tooele, under a new coaching staff headed by Delayne Richhart found itself in the midst of the strongest football teams ever to comprise a region. Judge, West, Jordan and South all presented powerhouse teams that can be expected to battle for the state championship, now held by West, and the Buffs just didnt have the manpower to cope with the likes of these teams. If the Buffs lose to Murray Friday it will make the second year in a row that the Buffs have failed to win a single ball game, and will mark the 23rd loss in a row for the Buffs. Grantsville had a disappointing season. Coach Larry Harrison recognized that he had a young inexperienced team, but he expected the Cowboys to do much better than they did. To date the Pokes have won just one game, a league game against Emery. Grantsville failed to win a single nonleague game, and have also lost three league games, leaving Harrison with a mark. Dugway is the only one of the trio of having a winning record. Coach Steve Larsons Mustangs won 4 7 non-leag- games and lost only one, while winning one league game and losing 2, for an overall record of A win over Park City Friday and it could be a brand new season for Dugway, a loss at it is all over. With football season over, waiting in the wings is basketball, swimming and wrestling, with hope springing anew that things will get better. 5-- 3. HAPPINESS , There are two ways of sufficiency and happiness. We may either diminish our wants or augment our .means either will do the result is the same; and it is for each man to decide for himself, and do that which happens to be - easiest. If you are idle or sick or poor, however hard it may be to diminish your wants, it will be harder to augment your means. If you are active and prosperous or young or in good health, it may be easier for you to augment your means than to diminish your wants. But if you are wise, you will do both at the same time, young or old, rich or poor, sick or well: and if you are very wise you will do both in such a way as to augment the general happiness of Benjamin Franklin ciety. so- |
