Show N An Open Letter Schools Positive Aspects Far Outweigh The Bad by Clarke N. Johnsrn Superintendent of Tooele County Schools Kids can't read, write or do arithmetic. There is no discipline in the schools. Teachers dont care. There are too many administrators. There are too many frills and not enough basics. Money is wasted on useless programs. On and on it goes, one criticism after another, in the twauty parlor, at church, at the army base, in the store, at club or whereever. If criticism persists, the confi- dence of the criticized is destroyed and they become what they think others think they are. This is a prophecy. This is a condition that can occur in the Tooele County School District if the good thinkers of this county don't come forth with positive reinforcement of the many excellent things that are happening in our schools. THE CRITICISM of the bad needs to lie turned to praise for the good as the good far outweighs the bad. Such a process would eventually eliminate the bad, and we would have a school system that was a delight to all. We recognize that our schools are not perfect by any sense of the word, but they g are much better than critics give them cre- are experiencing difficult times. Likely, dit for. Parents, students and citizens in general must assess the part they play in the process. Parents and citizens in general need to see that the resources are provided to maintain a quality educational program and, above all, that means retaining the many excellent teachers that now work in this self-estee- m appreciation. Many are discouraged and looking forother occupations, realizing that there will be few opportunities for them as they are largely untrained for other employment, having prepared and dedicated their lives to helping boys and girls. We, the people of this county, can control our destiny as far as the educational program is concerned. If we give more than we have ever given, if we appreciate each other and show it with positive acts and words, if we Icxk for the good and try to correct the by working together, and if we just "hang tough" through these difficult times, our educational system will become stronger because of the adversities, and we will establish a foundation of quality education for many years to come. STUDENTS, particularly high school, ld must assess the part they play in the process. While there is little they can do financially there is everything they can do achievement and conduct wise. They can attend every class every day and do all within their ability to team and achieve. losepa Search I am compiling a history of the Hawaiian colony of losepa, which existed in Tooele County from 1888 to 1915. Anderson ; -- ' , ; Embarrassing To The Editor: This is in regard to the meeting held in Ophir on January 27th concerning the Sperry-Univa- c request to build a testing site there. I would like to thank the County Commissioners and County Attorney Ron Elton for their cooperation in this matter. I wish to thank those who represented Sperry-Univa- c at this meeting. I am sorry that some of those in attendance laughed, yelled and generally showed disrespect toward those who spoke in favor of the request by Sperry. It was particularly embarrassing to me when some of those at the meeting showed disrespect toward Mr. Sid Hullinger after all he and Mr. McFarland have done for the community of Ophir. For these people I publically apologize for those irresponsible actions. Apologies should also go to all of those in the community who spent hundreds of hours installing the towns water system whose efforts were ignored when the subject was discussed, including Mr. McFarland and Mr. Hullinger.
