The regulations recently promised by the Ihiieau of Management governing suifate mining provide a good example of reavm fur local com crn. In brief. I have suggested that: (1) liefore issuing a second set of the Bureau hold a series of discussion meetings in the field, with mining and environmental grciuis. and other citizens, to give them vinie idea of the direction BI.M is going; (2) a second set of proMisals then Ik issued, with an adequate formal comment jierind; pro-iosal- s, CARS, TRUCKS FOR SALE and then (3i that final regulations follow the formal comment ieiiod I II W E also strongly suggested that any regulations issued this year not effective until after the itKuiuiiig held The regot.il ions are now slated to go into died this spring. There is considerable evidence suggesting that many people should lower intake of the foods that tend to raise blood cholesterol levels. Any would mother of a teen-age- r be wise to do what she can to emphasize foods which are nutritious and moderately low in saturated fat and cholesterol. In family avoid overemphasis of butter, lard, whole milk cheese, cream, whole milk, fatty cuts of meat, sugar and rich desserts. Put more emphasis on and breads, dry beans and peas, leaner cuts of meat, chicken, turkey and fish. Use your imagination to make fruits and vegetables more appealing. Provide skim or low-fa- t milk, polyunsaturated margarine and relatively low-fa- t cheeses such as cottage, farmers, mozzarella and ricotta. When teens snack away from home, let them know that hamburgers, frankfurters and pizzas and the whole family of ice cream treats are high in saturated fats. The active hungry boy might eat a sandwich made with poultry, fish or peanut butter. The dieting girl might have a low-fa- t yogurt or a vegetable salad from a delicatessen. Fresh fruit is a good choice for boys and girls. At age fifteen, a boy weighing 130 pounds is likely to need 3,000 Calories. A girl weighing 114 needs only 2,4 00 Calories, and considerably less if shes battling overweight. So its no wonder youve noticed a difference in their eating patterns. A change in your menu planning can aid both of them. And perhaps, when your children realize whats at stake, they will change their snacking selections as well.
