There was even a sniping incident right in front of his apartment. The trouble which was racial in character began with a fight at ' a local high school and continued for about five days. From Chattanooga he moved on to Richmond, Ky., where he worked mostly on the campus of East Kentucky University. The studeut reaction to the church is really open minded, he reoften ports. The missionaries conducted group meetings with as many as 40 or 50 students at a time. During most of his service as a missionary Elder Tonioli worked almost exclusively with students and other young people. His next assignment took him to Tompkinsville, Ky., a hill town of 3000 people just east of Bolling Creen on the KenTennessee border. Here tuckyhe found many clothing factories and small tobacco farms. Closely regulated by the government, one-haan acre of tobacco brings as much as $2000 to the farmer, he said. MOST OF the people grow tobacco or work in the factories and some live in homes which even today are without indoor plumbing. As part of their Word of Wisdom Mormons teach that tobacco is not good for man, and because of the traditions of these people the Word of Wisdom became the greatest obstacle faced by the missionaries. Often children begin smoking when they are only ten years old, he said. There is also the problem of boot-leliquor but in spite of this the people invite you to eat with them even if they dont want to hear your message. Elder Tonioli was a zone leader with the responsibility to supervise the entire Tennessee-Sout- h Zone and 22 missionaries at'i the time1 of 'his irelease.,'For eighteen months amt, of this two, years he was assigned as a district or zone leader. THROUGHOUT the mission the climate was very humid and hot, he said.
