First, let me 0 touch briefly on the supply buying of U.S. securities. Espedemand factor as related to cially from European investors. ; common stocks. For a long time now, Ive felt that the decided upeurve in institutional demand continues to be a very real suppoi t for the market. As someone put it rather succinctly; Its simply a case of too much money chasing too few stocks. As far as supply is concerned, over the last 10 yeais weve seen a change. Coiporate managements have been less inclined to get their money via the equity route. Sacrifice of ownership and inevitable dilution are two of the leasons. And, of course, in going the debt route bond interest is tax deductible. In the last few yeais especially the new issue markets have been heavily weighted in favor of bond offeiings. So we have a dramatic increase on the demand side and a decrease on the supply side. Result? Higher stock prices. Just like the results of any supplydemand imbalance. In addition theres one other factor which has contributed recently to higher stock prices: the substantial influx of foreign stantial buying from British trusts, Swiss hanks, and both Dutch and German funds. When I was in Britain last summer, I talked to several London bankers, as well as portfolio managers of the Scottish trusts in Edinburgh. Strangely enough, the Scots, feel more constructive about the' longer-teroutlook for U.S. stock prices than many analysts in our own country. Despite all the hue and cry from Europe some months ago about a flight from the dollar, lecent weakness in the French fianc, plus last Novembers devaluation of sterling, has made many Europeans take a second look at investment opin the United portunities States. Potential American investors aie now concerned about timing. Should you commit funds now? In my view, waiting to invest-pend- ing clarification of either economic or market uncertainties is a chancy business. If, at any given moment, an investment situation looks attractive (in terms of your own individual objectives), I believe this is the basis for investment decisions. Obviously, timing is important. But waiting for a consolidation in the market, for clarification of international uncertainties, for he results of an election, all involve substantial risk. If a stock looks attractive, I would say now is the time to bu it! m |
