It affects the skeletal muscles, such as the bietps youngsters show by flexing their arms and some forms of MI) also affect the heart muscle. MO usually be gins in childhood and affects over 200, 000 Americans. The most prevalent form of MD is the progressive (or Duchenne) type. It is a genetic trail carried by women who show no symptoms themselves. But there is a 50 percent chance they will transmit this gene to their male offspring. This type of muscular dystrophy begins to affect the child between the ages of two and ten, and accounts for almost of all cases of MD. MD sometimes develops in those with no family history of the disease. It is thought that genetic mutations are responsible for these cases. Although no effective treatment has been found for MD, various remedial measures make it possible for patients to continue to enjoy comfortable lives for many years after the disease begins. Physical therapy is useful in delaying the disorder's crippling effects, and slings and braces permit the patient to continue to use his weakening muscles. MD patients retain (he use of their fingers, since the last muscles affected are the small ones of the hand. Muscular dystrophy, research focuses on treatment and prevention. A recently developed technique for identifying carriers of the gene for the progressive type of MD increases the chances for prevention. With this new techniuue, physicians measure the amJbnt of the enzyme creatine phosphokinase in the blood. If the blood contains an amount. two-thir- . the patient may be a carrier of progressive MD. Identification of these curriers allows physicians to alert these persons to the potential danger of having a child with MD. of this The development technique is representative of the research conducted and supported by the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness (NINDB) since its formation in 1950 us one of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Research grants to individual medical scientists and to specialized neurological research centers, as well as laboratory and clinical studies at the Institute form the backbone of NINDB's attack on muscular dystrophy. To speed the prevention and cure of this crippling disorder, the Institute also emphasizes and supports the training of neuromuscular specialists. This training helps to prepare more physicians for the basic and research clinical neurological needed today. In one study, certain drugs which may help to control MD are now being tested at university neurological centers supported by NINDB. Specialized diagnostic and tests are used in these studies, and these techniques are being taught to neurologists receiving training under the Institute's program. Increased support of research into the underlying structural and chemical abnormalities present in MD and other neuromuscular diseases, together with the training of more neuromuscular specialists, brightens the hope that a cure for these tragic disorders will be found.
