WHATS BEEN happening is that many (nobody knows how many) widows receiving benefits have been failing to notify the authorities when they make the trip to the altar again. The law says that when these widows remarry, they are no longer eligible for benefits, Congresss bloodhound agency, the General Accounting Office (GAO), recently looked into the matter and found some widowhoodwinking of five federal agencies which make substantial widow payments. They are the Social Security Administration, Veterans Administration, U. S. Civil Service Commission, Railroad Retirement Hoard and the Bureau of Employees Compensation. GAO was able to conduct only a limited study, but what it found is very revealing. It identified J 47 widow beneficiaries who had received payments but who had become ineligible because of another I do. They had been overpaid $82, 000, and future payments of about $1.2 million might have been made if their new marital status had not been dis covered. WHEN YOU consider that in 1967 the above-name- d agencies made payments of about $1.6 billion to 1.8 million widows, the significance of GAO's spotcheck results becomes apparent.
