Because of th interesting embellishment! to often found on their flaps, cartridge boxes particularly present an intriguing field for the collector, according to the National Rifle Association. THE CARTRIDGE boxes of foreign nations, the NRA points out, often carry noble crests, royal copheis, and other trappings identifying the regal houses served by the troops using the accessories. One may assemble representative specimens of various type cartridge boxes, pouches and belts reaching as far back as the time of Gustabus Adolwho is creditphus ed with devising the paper cartridge to allow easier handling of the powder and ball used by his troops in their flintlock muskets. First, however, the collector should do some basic reading on the subject of military trappings, seeking out illustrations of the various types of boxes, pouches and belts. Unfortunate ly. research material often is harder to come generally across than the items But a considerable amount of detailed information can be found in various editions of oidnance manuals, books on military costumes and kindred publications. FOR THOSE collectors interested in the U.S. Service, three of ordnance editions manuals (1841, 1850, 1861) are recommended by the NRA. Each edition covers in detail the various cartiidge boxes us-- 1 in the service at the time of publication. The first two editions of these manuals, otherwise very difficult to obtain, may be requested by your local librarian from The Librarian of Congress, Libiary of Congress, Wash 25, D.C. When the manuals have been sent to your library, you may read them there at your leisure. Some very interesting later tinued in use, with the loops reduced to fit the smaller caliber (.30) cartridges. With the advent of th .30 caliber Springfield Model 1903, five-sho- t clip-lerifle, the cart ridge belt necessarily underwent a major redesigning. The new belt was equipped with 9 pockets, each large enough to accomodate two clips of five cartridges each. This general type of cartridge belt has continued in service to the present time, although minor changes have tyen introduced as methods of packaging cartridges have been altered. Thus, in 1939, when the M l Garand rifle was adopted, cartridge belt pockets were revamped to accomodate the new dips containing eight cartridges. Since then, further design changes become necessary have to handle the cartridges carried by soldiers armed with the MI4 or "NATO." service rifle. CARTRIDGE boxes, pouches and belts are still available In considerable supply. Although the prices of guns are continually on the use, the NRA reports, a person of limited means can enjoy the hobby of accoutercollecting military ments without spending a great deal of money In the process. He can acquire, for the price of a single musket, a whole armful of interesting pouches, belts and boxes and thus his efforts with many fas cinating and informative hours.
