TOOELE HAS TWO CAPABLE State Legislators In Senator Mantes and Representative llalladay. They have been recognized a such by their legislative colleagues who have placed them on key and Influential com- l3 mittees Both of them are interested in your helping them to do a good Job for you by making your thinking and your views known. THEY FACE THE IMPOSSIBLE task of carefully considering hundreds of bills containing proposals that will effect you and I in many ways and especially in the pocket book. Wise as they are they cannot hope to find the time from their responsibilities in the Legislature and on legislative committees to consider every facet of every bill that comes before them for judgment of vote. Senator Mantes is very concerned that Tooele County citizens recognize this fact and has made proposals to several community leaders that a committee be organized that will represent all segments of Tooele County groups to study and make recommendations to him concerning bills that will effect us directly and indirectly. HE RECOGNIZES THE LACK of time he will have to fully cona bill with sider each bill. So much so, that he Senator Miller that it is now in the legislative hopper to provide an interval between introduction and final action on all bills so that legislators might have more time to fully consider the laws they pass and their implications. Both the proposal for community study and additional time for the individual legislature to study and seek counsel on various bills presented at each legislative session are extremely wise ones. EDWARD C. ROBINSON CYD sponsibility In government of which these proposals are in the best of that tradition. As citizens of Tooele County and residents of the st&Ui of Ulah and of the United Slates, living in an age when Tyrees threaten our way of life and government, we have not only the of aiding our two opportunity but the serious responsibility Slate Legislators In their task of providing good government to us AS INDIVIDUALS AND AS GROUPS who often discuss less vital issues, we tan make our judgment known to Senator Mantes and Representative Halladay in time to aid them in making the Intelligent decisions they sre both striving for. Issues suth is increased taxes for the many things needed to provide for the future of the rising generation as well as the present one, reapportionment of the legislature to make a more fair representation of population of the state: school facilities and staff to make educational opportunities available to all, are going to be decided for longer than Just the next biennium Schools, reapportionment, state finances and others have reached the turning point In influencing the philosophy of state government and both Tooele Representatives are of the opinion that this legislature will lay down some far reaching principles on these Issues and others. IT IS TO BE HOPED THAT this session will see more Interest than last session in the Utah legislative process by Tooele County citizens. Representative Halladay reports that only one group, the teachers, contacted him last session of the legislature as Tooele Cou nty citizens. Senator Mantes also received little Indication that Tooele County citizens were Interested in their legislati re during the last session. THERE ISNT ONE CITIZEN of Tooele County that will have any right to compalin of higher taxes, discrimination, or not enough teachers or classroom space for his children, if he does not take an active interest in the legislature for these crucial 60 days.
