With the summer barbecue season moving into full swing, investigators caution the public to be wary of some meat sales or door-to-do- offers from other retailers. This is the time of year that we see illegal and decep- tive offers of meat sales in our state, said Doug Pearson, Regulatory Services compli ance investigator. It is illegal to sell meat by the package instead of by the pound, he said. Pearson also says it is common to see advertisements for ultra-lomeat deals that are intended to lure consumers in. only to see them pressured into buying much higher priced meat. Pearson advises consumers to make sure they know the per pound cost of the meat they're buying. Ask the salesperson for a w ritten invoice itemizing the IISDA grade of the product and the cost per pound. The safety advocates report identified six factors that contribute to most fatal crashes. These factors are: failure to wear safety belts or use child safety seats properly, drinking and driving, fatigue, car maintenance failures, speed and distractions. The report indicated the extent of these problems and gave survival strategies for each. Improper use or not using restraints: Safety restraint use is at an high and child safety seats have dramatically reduced child all-tim- death. However, 75 percent seats are improperly installed and over 20 percent of drivers and passenger do not wear seat belts. Always use safety belts even for short trips. Keep children restrained in a child safety seat or booster seat until they turn 8 or weight 80 pounds. Make sure child safety seats are properly installed. Read installation instructions in the owners manuals for safety seats and the vehicle. If still in doubt, call local health departments, law enforcement agencies and hospitals for information about car seat checks andor certified installers. Keep children properly restrained in the back seat. Replace child safety seats ever)' five years because wear from use and temperature changes may weaken a seats strength and integrity. Alcohol use: Two of every three children killed in an alcohol-relatecrash were riding with a driver who had been drinking but was not necessarily drunk. Nearly a third of teen drivers killed on the road had been drinking. Families are most likely to encounter a drunk driver between midnight and 3 a.m. when they may be trying to cover some miles while children are asleep. Dont drink and drive even short distances. Drivers who have been drinking have higher crash rates even if they dont exceed the legal limit. Avoid driving all night to of child safety d MT. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about alcohol and drug interactions and follow their advice. 'Don't be deceived. Average servings of wine, mixed drinks, or beercontain almost the same quantity of pure alcohol and will all read the same on a breathalyzer. Fatigue: In the past five years, 1.35 million drivers attributed crashes to drowsiness. During summer, families with children were six times more likely to drive home from a long day trip while fatigued than people w ithout children. of these families said they are likely to drive while fatigued to get home from a weekend getaway and 59 percent said they are likely to drive fatigued to get to a destination in one night. Fifty-seve- n Get enough sleep the night before a long trip. Sleeping less than six hours increases your risk of falling asleep at the wheel. Dont plan to work all day and drive all night. Car Maintenance. Neglected maintenance leads to 2,600 deaths annually and nearly 100,000 disabling injuries. and tires can result in serious injuries. In summer tires are especially vulnerUnder-inflatin- g over-inflatin- g able because long trips, heavy loads, higher temperatures and higher speeds put additional stress on tires. Schedule a major service visit for the vehicle two weeks before a big road trip to check the' car systems. These include cooling, braking, lights, belts, hoses, wipers, horn, and fluids. Check tires carefully. Measure tire pressure when tires are cold. Keep tires at the recommended pressure, not maximum pressure. Check for signs of wear, damage, bulges or tread separation. Tire tread should be deep enough so the grooves touch the top of Lincolns head on a penny inserted head first into the groove. Bald tires should be replaced. Check with a mechanic if tires are wearing unevenly. Make sure tires are aligned and balanced. Make time for a safety check before getting on the road. Check tire pressure, wipers, and fluid levels. Clean windows and adjust mirrors. Check child safety seats and towing hitch if used. Dont overload the vehicle. Cars and tires are designed to operate safely only up to their load limits which are listed in the owners manual. Make sure any loose ob- - . jects in vehicle are securely fastened. Speed: Most crashes occur at 40 mph or less, but most fatal crashes occur at top speeds. last-minut- e See Driving on page 6 Manti Quilt Show June p.m. Horseshoe Mountain Quilt Guild will host a quilt show during the Mormon Miracle Pageant.
