New railing at the Mona City building will make access safer By Myrna Trauntvein Ti m es News Correspon dent Mona has a new protective railing which runs along the east of the city building and the west of the building at the city park. The roof of the city building was also extended above the walkway. Both were projects spearheaded by Darlene Fowkes, council member. snack-servin- g Mike Stringer did the welding work and he and Harry Newell, council member, placed the railing along the pathways to the two buildings. Mike (Stringer) has a portable welder and he also did the design for the two railings, said Newell. Newell said the work had taken quite a bit of time and Stringer had donated the time it took. The railing pipe cost the city approximately $200 and were made so that they would prevent those who visit the sites from stepping off the elevated edges of the concrete paving. The railings make the entrances more safe for all visitors but, in particular, for those who may be physically challenged. The railings will keep any one from stepping off the edge at either building and getting injured, said Newell. Mayor Bryce Lynn also extended the edge of the roof of the city building above the railing to keep the walkway along the east from getting wet and from accumulating ice during winter storms. A concrete walk will be built and a retainer wall be placed along the walkway. There will also be lighting and benches built. Along with the grass will come the planting of trees, shrubs, flower beds, a pavilion for eating and a gazebo for entertainment and resting. In a letter he wrote to all re'idents of the community, Newton said: "When completed, it will make a beautiful and relaxing addition to our city and a new peaceful area to go relax, have a picnic, jog around the pathway, listen to entertainment or just sit on the slopes and smell the flowers. The young people of the community will also enjoy a skating park as part of the Memorial Park. Everyone donating will have their name placed on a plaque stating what part of the memorial park they contributed toward and the person they contributed for. Those wanting to donate for the purchase of a light pole, tree, grass, sprinklers, or other item, would have their name or the name of a loved one they wish remembered, near the area where the contributed funds were used for a purchase (such as a tree) or on the bench or light pole. Everd Squire, city treasurer, said he has been accepting donations and placing them, as specified, in one of two special accounts the Memorial Park Fund or the skate park fund. Mona Council thanks County Deputy Sheriff By Myrna Trauntvein Times-New- Correspondent s Mona City Council members wanted to thank Greg Gurney, a former Juab County Deputy Sheriff, for his work in the community while he w'as working as a law enforcement officer. He was like having our own personal police officer, said Harry Newell. Having a deputy living in the community was good, he aid. Gurney would not only enforce the laws but would talk to young people about obeying the law and would answer calls from concerned citizens in Mona. Mona has a contract with the county to provide police service for the community but having Gurney in the community was a big help. Of course, he still lives in Mona but he no longer works for the county," said Newell. Now he works for Salem." Because he was not a law enforcement officer in the county, Gurney no longer had jurisdiction in Mona. We miss the good work he did for us," said Newell.
