Three rescued black bear cubs released back into the wild The future is looking brighter for three black bears cubs that were orphaned from their mothers in Utah last year. After heirrgsuc-cessfullrehabilitated, they were released recently by Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists into the eastern portion of the Manti-LSal National Forest, near border in the y a Utah-Colorad- o Grand County. The three cubs were orphaned in different ways in 2002. One cub was accidentally captured in a snare trap, the mother of another cub was taken illegally during a hunting season and the mother of the third cub was killed by a vehicle. The cubs weighed , 15- - and same day they were picked up from Idaho. Before being released, all three were fitted with ear tags and radio collars. This will allow biologists to monitor their habits. Maughan says rehabilitated bear cubs do very well in the wild and have minimal problems with people. Out of the 79 bears I have rehabilitated, and which were eventually released, only two exhibited any nuisance behavior at a later date, she from a shooting spree that occurred last winter in Castle Valley near Moab. I n November 2002, the men were involved in multiple incidents of shooting deer out of season, usually at night using courts. ff!e courts ordered the three defendants to pay a combined total of $4,930 in fines and restitution. A rifle and archery equipment were :ner a spotlight or automo- bile headlights. Two of the defendants, Harley Lammert and Codi Kerby, were charged with Class A Misdemeanors. The third defendant, Derrick Kerby, was charged with a Class B Misdemeanor. The men were tied to the shooting of three deer, although informants reported that the men had bragged about shooting as many as 22 animals. All of the men received also forfeited. One of the bucks shot barely missed classification as a trophy. Under Utahs trophy statute, killing a buck antler spread with a is a felony, punishable by prison time and substantial fines and restitution. Trucks, and any other property used in the commission of the felony may also be forfeited, if a court deems it 24-inc- h suspended jail sentences up to two years upon their meeting the conditions of probation ordered by the appropriate. This case was successfully prosecuted because someone cared enough to get involved and call the Division of Wildlife Resources. If you observe suspicious or illegal wildlife-relateactivity, please call the Help Stop Poaching' hotline at or notify your local public safety dispatcher: Utahs wildlife needs all the help it can get. Suffering from prolonged drought, poor range conditions and predation, we cant afford to lose animals to people who have no respect for life and property. d Economic growth is stronger than expected U.S. economic growth real registered at a 2.4 (after inflation) annual rate in 2003s second quarter, stronger than the 1.5 gain expected by most forecasters. This stronger growth rate follows two consecutive quarters at a meager 1.4 real annual rate. We expect U.S. economic growth to continue to strengthen over the balance of the year and into 2004. A long list of factors supports this view. These include 1) short-terinterest rates are at their lowest level in 45 years; 2) tens of thousands of homeowners have again refinanced mortgages, improving their monthly cash flow for years to come; 3) the latest tax cut will provide solid incentives for investment, as well as $12 billion in expanded child credit checks to lower- - and middle-incom- e taxpayers in coming weeks; 4) global concerns about the SARS virus have rapidly declined; 5) a weaker U.S. dollar will stimulate U.S. exports, especially to Europe; 6) Iraqi unknowns are now primarily behind us; and 7) recent evidence suggests companies are finally spending more on technology. Stronger U.S. economic growth will have a positive influence on the performance of the Utah economy. The level of U.S. economic growth is a component of the Small Business Index.
