Research shows teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 years are more likely to die or be injured as a result of a motor vehicle crash than for any other cause. Teen deaths and injuries are disproportionately high when teens drive with teen passengers, do not wear seat belts and drive at night, said Rolayne Fairclough, AAA Utah spokesperson. It cited a Connecticut study of parents of teens with learners permits on the parents perceptions of risk for a variety of teen driving behaviors. In the Connecticut study, parents were asked to grade the risks their teens faced in many situations. The parents average score for driving was 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 represented extreme risk. If these parents understood that their children were more likely to be killed or injured m a crash than from any other cause, they probably would have given driving a score of 10. Their rankfor driving ings were: 61 without a seat belt; 48 for driving in bad weather; 42 for driving with friends on a weekend; 32 for driving at night in the rain; and 28 for driving with two or more teens in tbe car. It is clear from this study that many parents do not understand what driving situations place their teens in the most jeopardy. When parents do not understand the real risks involved in driving, they will have difficulty monitoring their teens driving to provide the safest learning situations. Parents can look to the Graduated Driver Licensing law as a guideline to the driving situations that need closest monitoring. The Graduated Driver Licensing Law addresses: Seat Belt Use. The use of seat belts is known to significantly reduce deaths and injuries in crashes. Because teens have the lowest usage rate, a primary seat belt law in Utah provides that everyone under the age of 9 years must be restrained by a safety seat system appropriate for his or her age. 1 Nighttime Driving. Because nighttime driving poses a greater risk for teens, the practice permit period requires 10 of the 30 hours of practice to occur during darkness. The law also restricts driving between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. for new drivers until the age of 17. (Certain exceptions for work, school, agricultural or religious activities are given.) Passenger Limitation. Nationally, two-third- s of teen passengers killed in crashes are passengers in vehicles driven by other teens. In Utah the numbers Cool, cool water feels good on hot feet! are worse 85 of the year olds hospitalized patients were in a vehicle driven by a year old. For these reasons, it is very important to limit passengers. The Graduated Driver Licensing law prohibits new drivers from carrying teen passengers for the first six months of their license, up to the age of 18. The new driver may drive with family members or friends if there is a licensed adult driver in the front seat. Certain exceptions are allowed for work, school, church or agricultural activities if the teen has a permission note from their parent or guardian. Driving Under the Influence.
