Born March 22, 1930 in Roosevelt, Utah, to Alvin Andrew and LaVon Emma Smith Coombs. He married Patricia Ann Hildebrand on March 7, 1952 in the Manti LDS Temple. Jay received education in Fountain Green and Moroni schools, as well as attending vocational school in 1952, for refrigeration and air conditioning. He was employed with Geneva Steel for 15 years and retired in 1991. Jay was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints.
