Forest Health There is a lot of discussion taking place lately about the unhealthy condition of the nations forests and the need to aggressively treat the forests to return them to a more healthy and productive state. One need not look too far to see examples of unhealthy forests here in Utah. Portions of the Dixie National Forest in southern Utah are in need of vegetative treatments. The Griffin Springs Resource Management Project consisting of sprucefir and aspen The forests is a forest is unhealthy with too many trees per acre. Aspen, a highly desirable species, is being crowded out by the more spruce and fir trees. Also, there is case-in-poin- shade-tolera- t. an alarming mortality rate larger spruce trees due to insect infestation. To change this unhealthy of forest, the USDA Forest Service has proposed using a variety of commercial and . timber harvesting techniques to reduce stand densities, regenerate aspen clones, and sanitize and salvage and dead spruce trees. The professional foresters of the Forest Service are attempting to do the right thing and return this portion of the national forest to a more healthy state in a professional way. In addition to this project being the right management for an unhealthy forest, the sale of the trees from the Griffin Springs area in Garfield County will provide much needed timber to keep the small, local family-owneinsect-infeste- d d mills operating. These mills are a vital part of rural Utahs economy. For example, the mill at Escalante supports approximately 100 workers and generates approximately $1.8 million in salaries and wages for the surrounding Utahs Department of Natural Resources has asked the Forest Service for interested party status in the appeal. We are concerned about the status of this project. We want Utah to have the proper and vegetation professional management necessary for healthy forest ecosystems. We believe a reduction in hazardous biomass is critical to prevent catastrophic wildfires. This particular project is vital to the economy of southern Utah. The sawmill at Escalante, one of the few remaining mills in Utah, is depending on timber from the Griffin Springs project. Keeping people employed and local economies strong is important to all of Utah. We fully support the decision of the Dixie Forest Supervisor. We believe it is important to remove the diseased spruce and fir trees and take action to cause the regeneration of aspen trees. The health of the forest depends on it. We cannot allow a few individuals with extreme environmental views to derail sound resource management. A. Share story of learning The Education in Zion Exhibit is inviting the public to share stories of learning. Stories are needed to bring to life a permanent, exhibit, Education in Zion, to be housed in a gallery in the new Joseph F. Smith building now under construction on the Brigham Young University campus, in Provo, Utah. multi-medi- a Terry Warner, exhibit coordinator, says this is the first time that stories about the educational heritage of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints will have heen archived and exhibited on a large scale. Ideas for stories include, but are not limited to, the following categories that will be specific sections in the y exhibit: traditions of faith and learning, foundations of education in the restored gospel, early schools in Zion, education in the family and extending learning to all the world (including distance learning, Church Education System, and the Perpetual Education Fund). We know the stories are out there. This is our chance to collect them and use them to inspire us and generations to come to seek learning in the light, says Warner. John 7:47 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. 1 Corinthians 15:33 Oh, if I did that I would go straight to hell. These words came from a young stewardess on a Northwest Airline flight that a good friend of mine was on. She talked freely about a marriage to a that brought the wrath of her parents and a divorce from her mate. The court awarded the two children to him and it broke her heart. She really wanted to marry again, but even though she and her boyfriend were very much in love, they called it off rather than risk another break up. My friend suggested what she really needed was to put her faith in Jesus Christ and let Him give her some peace and direction. That is when she blurted out, Oh, if I did that I would go straight to hell. This is so sad and so typical of Muslim teaching that is so misrepresented by our liberal media today. She had been raise in non-Musli- a Muslim home where she was taught and believed that Christ was a deceiver and that it would be a moral sin for her to accept Him as Saviour. The Bible is clear, Jesus came to keep people out of hell, not send them there. Paul spoke of being carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led 1 Cor. 12: 2. How we need to gather up children and bring them to Sunday School and teach them that Jesus loves them and wants to save their souls. Jesus wants to save them and take them to Heaven before they get exposed and taught some contrary thinking like this. Becoming a Christian means for one to put their faith and faith alone in Jesus alone. May God help us teach the Bible. Anything else is not Gods Word. To believe in something as important as eternity from another source is eternally dangerous. It is the Bible that God has given us and it is the doctrines of the Bible that will give life. Believing in Jesus doesnt send a person to hell. The message of the Bible is clear. Jesus said. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. John 6:47.
