Show Page 7 Wednesday, May 7, 2003 (The Nephi, Utah s (Timcs-Cctu- Worthington is recognized as a winner in Arbor Day Poster Contest ,, A Kambree Worthington was chosen as the 2nd grade winner in the State Arbor Day Poster Contest. She was honored on Arbor Day Friday, April 25, 2003, at a ceremony held at Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City. Sterling Poul-soof KUTV New's was the Master of Ceremonies. Lt. Governor Olene Walker and State Forester Joel Frandsen were special speakers at the e ent. Kambree and the other winners planted a tree after the ceremony. Kambree won a $75.00 Savings Bond, a plaque, and several other prizes. There were 250 schools that participated in the contest. The contest had over 100,000 entries this year. Kambree is the daughter of Mark and Jodee Worthington. Her grandparents are Ned and Mavis Worthington of Ephraim. Her n SENIOR SPOTLIGHT Joe Sherwood is the son of Michael and Melodie Sherwood of Nephi. His accomplishments include Block J in keyboarding. He is on the Youth Council. Her accomplishments include school musicals and plays, FBLA, Family, Consumer and Health Science Sterling Scholar. She has received the Young Womanhood Recognition award, member of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony (3 years), toured with the Symphony to London and Paris. After graduation, she plans to attend Utah Valley State College then transfer to California and receive a degree in mortuary science. Dog bite prevention tips Parents and pet owners are key to preventing dog bites. Each year, dogs bite 4.7 million Americans, 60 percent of which are children. It is essential for parents to teach children how to avoid situations where dogs may attack and for pet owners to follow leash laws and be responsible with their pets. Mans best friend will bite half of all children in the U.S. by the 12th grade. Seventy percent of dog bites occur on the dog owners property. A dog that attacks is very often the family pet. To prevent dog attacks: Be a Safety-Smar- t Dog Owner Never leave infants or children alone with a dog. Keep the family dog healthy an unnoticed injury can make a dog aggressive. Socialize the dog treat dogs like part of the family. Follow leash laws. a stray dog or a dog acting strangely. Never disturb a dog that eating, or caring for its puppies. is sleeping, Never play aggressive games with dogs. Ask permission from a dogs owner before petting the animal. If Bitten Children should tell an adult right away. Control the bleeding and gently cleanse the bite area with soap and water. Get medical help immediately to determine the risk of infection or rabies. Because serious dog bites can cause scarring, be sure to ask in the emergency room for a plastic surgeon.
