As a result, some fad people turn to diets to help them drop those excess pounds that have been slowly building over the years. The trouble with fad diets is that while you may lose some weight in a short period, that weight will probably return very quickly as soon as the dieting ends, says Jeffrey Anderson, M.D., president of the American Heart Association, Utah Division. But even more important is the fact that fad diets can be ous to your health. danger- There are several ways to define a fad diet. For example, it may offer magic or miracle foods that burn fat. Foods dont burn fat they create it when people eat more calories than they need. Losing weight requires people to use more energy than they consume, forcing the body to use the surplus. Some diets may offer bizarre quantities of a food or types of food such as cabbage, soup or grapefruit. Others turn to rigid menus that set limits for selections of foods to be eaten at specific times and days. These can become boring and hard to follow. The American Heart Associations dietary guidelines recommend a varied diet emphasizing grains, vegetables, fruits, lean meat, fish, poultry, and nonfat and low-fa- t dairy products. Other fad diets may recom- mend specific food combinations although no scientific evidence suggests a benefit from eating foods in certain sequences or combinations. Promoters of fad diets seldom warn people with either diabetes or high blood pressure to seek advice from a physician or other healthcare professional. Some fad diets can raise blood pressure or blood glucose even while a dieter is losing weight. High-fa- t diets, which often overemphasize protein, can lead to heart disease and cancer and worsen kidney or liver function in people with moderately advanced liver or kidney disease. Fad diets also fail to point out that simple physical activities like walking or riding a bike are important tools to losing weight and maintaining the loss. Most of this public land is located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. The full-tim- sub-surfac- e, e BLMss mis- multiple-us- e sion is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on the public lands.
