This project has helped thousands of Utahs mentally ill at .the Utah State Hospital to enjoy Christmas over the past 30 years. Once again, we are asking for your help to get the word out to Utah citizens that their help is needed in sponsoring a patient for Christmas. Christmas is a time to be joyful and a time to be with family and friends, but for many pa- tients without families at the Utah State Hospital Christmas can be the loneliest time of the year. Each year the Hospital re- cruits sponsors for over 300 patients, ranging in age from six to ninety, who would have no The Forgotten Patient Christmas Project was designed to help provide Christmas gifts for these people who need to be remembered. The success of the program depends totally on volunteers from the community and there are a variety of ways in which they can help. They can take a patient name and provide Christmas for that person; cash donations can be made and hospital volunteers will do the shop- are other students in this same situation. t I know meeting the needs of everyone is difficult, but I think the music program needs to be further learning. The colleges In recent Weeks, we have been hearing from the UEA that the citizens ofltahneed to ask their legislators ito support our children by increasing funding for education. I submit that as a community, we need to support our children by increasing attendance at school activities. In the coming months, there will be basketball games, wrestling matches, musical productions, band concerts, choral concerts, etc., which are open to the public. Who will be there? Community support has always been a strength in this region. When the Salt Lake Valley was first settled, a community center for the arts was among the first items built. Educational facilities were also built. Subsequent settlements followed a similarpattem. ' Letters were recently written that our school district does not support music education very well. We have only one music teacher in the district to teach the upper grades. There is not enough time to teach general Sandra Westring music, choir, band, orchestra, Nephi jazz band, pep band, madrigals to both the middle school and high school students. More music education courses could be offered if the community insisted that more teachers are hired. and universities in our state support very strong art programs. There is drama, music, dance, art classes, etc., offered. The classes are not just for art majors, or dance majors, etc. Many classes are open to the general student population and to the community. Typically, the performing art groups, such as Young Ambassadors or Ballroom Dance, are m ade of students who have a different major. These students feel the arts are a complement to their courses of study and their communities. The district needs to support what we have. Allowing only nine of the twenty students go to honor band is not supporting our current programs. Letting the cheer squad attend an out of area competition as long as no school funds are used and the squad is not identified with Juab is not supporting our current programs. The community needs to support our students by attending school activities if we expect our school board to make any changes. More than the parents of the participants must attend these activities. We need to encourage and congratulate our students on their efforts. How can we ask the state legislature and the school board to increase funding if we do not support the activities that are open to the community, and support our students? Sincerely, Ken Westfall Nephi west roc C Ready Mixed Concrete And Rock Products 1 Dear Editor to help with As a parent of a Juab High School band student, I would like to express my support to Mr. Beal gnd his efforts to produce a quality program at the school. I attended the band concert a few weeks ago and was pleased and impressed with the students performance. My son plays the harmonic and the bass guitar. Neither o these instruments are used in the regular band class. He wanted to be in the Jazz Band. To be in this class, he had to be in the regular band class to get school credit. He likes the jazz band class, which meets three days a week at 7:00 a.m. In the regular band class he is rather bored because he shares the percussion section instruments with other students. It would be really nice to have the jazz band class offered on the regular school curriculum. There expanded.
