Thats why now is a good time to talk about fire safety and home winterization. Did you know that about every 44 seconds, a fire strikes a home in the United States? These fires caused 174 injuries, 13 deaths and over $32 mil- lion dollars worth of damage. Most home fires resulted from thoughtlessness. The easiest way to prevent fires is to keep heat and fuel sources apart. You can do that by following these suggestions: If you smoke, use smoking materials properly, never smoke in bed. Keep matches and lighters away from children. Keep flammable liquids in safety containers accepted by Underwriters Laboratories(UL). Store them in a shed or unattached garage. Fireplaces, wood-burnin- g stoves, space heaters and other heating units need to be inspected and serviced regularly. Also clean chimneys and vents frequently. Keep electrical appliances in good condition, do not ovei load electrical circuits; check cords and plugs for signs of wear. Do not allow rubbish to accumulate in or around your home. INSTALL AND MAINTAIN . SMOKE ALARMS. Most home fire deaths happen between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Most fire victims die from inhaling smoke and toxic gases, not from Wednesday, November 3, 1999 Nephi, Utah. tttWBrefas Teach children never to return to a burning house after thy exit. Train them not to hide under beds or in closets. WATCH OUT FOR . CARBON MONOXIDE. As the weather turns cooler and you begin to winterize your home, the last thing on yohr mind is carbon monoxide. As we seal up our homes to keep the cold air outside and the warm air in, we rarely give thought to in- door air quality, which is there J ' we live. chief the Usually pollutant of fc indoor air at home is carbon monoxide, a common product of incomplete combustion.
