Only 9 percent of fatigued patients were treated with prescription drugs or transfusions. The survey results confirm that the debilitating fatigue during cancer treatment is seriousand underly treated, said Dr. Gregory A. Curt, clinical director of the National Cancer Institute and a member ofthe Fatigue Coalition. The physical, emotional and economic stress of fatigue on cancer patients has a serious impact on their ability to get back to the business of living. The University of Utah School of Medicine study, is funded by a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, with additional funding from the Willard Eccles Institute. According to Reed Nelson, research coordinator, identification of the gene could help1 lead to early detection and treatment of aneurysms. Ultimately, the research could result in genetic therapies for individuals who are at high risk for the problem. Each year more than 30,000 people in the U.S. suffer an aneurysm approximately 60 percent of whom die. Study participants will have a sample of blood taken for genetic testing and complete a questionnaire. Many participants also may receive a free magnetic resonance angiography scan. Researchers from the medical schools departments of radiology, neurosurgery, and Division of Genetic Epidemiology are collaborating on the study.
