Lets first consider snow storms. If you have tall shrubs under your eaves, you would be well advised to bind their branches loosely with heavy twine and possibly burlap to help them retain their shape if snow from the roof happened to slide onto them. Take a soft kitchen broom around your yard with you after a heavy, wet snowstorm and gently bounce snow off trees from the underside of branches. If a small plant is completely covered, leave it. The snow will act as an insulator and protector. Do not shovel snow from around the base of a shrub or tree. The snow will help support the lower branches and insulate the roots system. If the storm occurs before the leaves have fallen from a deciduous tree, try to gently bounce the snow from those branches that are heavily bowed. Do not try to remove all of the snow, and dont pull on the tip of the branch or whip the branches up and best thing is to do nothing. Do not try to use warm water to re- move the ice. The sudden shock of heat can severely damage a plant. Tree wraps will help prevent sun scald, which can be a problem with our winter sunshine and cold temperatures. Loosely wrap the tree from ground level to bottom branches. Do not use plastic as it can build up heat and severely damage the tree. The object is not to keep the tree warm, but to keep it cold! CHRISTMAS TREES Dry Christmas trees can be dangerous in the house because the needles and branches contain a large amount of resin. Cut trees should be treated like cut flowers. As soon as a tree is cut it should be placed in water. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer ofus are able to go out and cut our own trees. The trees we buy from commercial lots have been harvested weeks in advance of the selling season. Be aware of this and choose the freshest tree possible. When you get home, cut off the bottom 2 or 3 inches of the trunk to expose the fresh wood. down. Keep your tree in water until you We seldom have ice storms take it down. The n Part ms What Is The Cost Of Raising A mbs Child Today? 2 U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates on costs of raising a child do not predict exactly what a particular family will spend but indicate trends. Urban families in the West spend more on their children than families in other parts of the U.S. (urban midwest and rug ral areas have the lowest expenses). Households with one child spend an average of 24 more on the single child, and those with three or more children spend an average of 23 less on each child. The older children are, the more they cost. The more income parents have, the more they spend on their children. The lower the income of a family, the larger the percentage of income spent on children. Single parent households generally have lower incomes, but for the younger child in a d household, expense patterns are much the same for single and families. For families with children, the trends in spending demonstrate the importance of financial planning and budgeting. We know that the expense of raising a child grows as the child gets oldchild-rearin- two-chil- child-rearin- g two-pare- nt Each winter, tens of thou- posed pipes with insulation.
