At their Thanksgiving dinners they placed five grains of corn by every plate as a voluntary reminder of those stem, harsh days of winter when the food supply of the Pilgrims had become so depleted that only five grains of com were rationed at one time to any individual. The early Pilgrims wanted their children to remember the sacrifice and hardship necessary to make possible the settlement of a free land. They wanted to keep alive the memory of that e long day trip taken in the tiny Mayflower. They desired to keep in their hearts the picture of that stern, rockbound, New England coast and the inhospitable greeting it extended setto its first tlers. The Pilgrims wanted to remember that first terrible winter which took such a toll of lives. They did not want their descendants to forget that on the day sixty-thre- post-Columb- o(7 (Sorra which their ration was reduced to five grains of com, only seven healthy colonists remained to nurse file sick. And nearly half their total number lay in a windswept graveyard on the hill. They also wanted to remember that when the Mayflower sailed back to England in the spring, only sailors were aboard. The display of five grains of com at each Thanksgiving Day plate was a fitting reminder to keep their heroic past fresh in their memories. The com served as an appropriate symbol to help the Pilgrim forefathers keep their gratitude to God alive and vital. Suppose that at this particular time we should borrow the Pilgrims Thanksgiving Day symbol and think what five grains of com at our plates might signify in our minds. This year, try starting a new family tradition by placing five grains of com (or candy com) at each place setting around your Thanksgiving Dinner table and let each person take a turn to express their thankfulness. While wild turkey permit numbers are up for 1999, a trend of increased interest among Utahs hunters in hunting wild turkeys may keep the odds of drawing a permit similar to past years. In 1998 the odds of drawing a Rio Grande permit were about 7 to 1, while the odds of drawing a Merriams permit were about 2 to 1. list showing the number of permits available for each of Utahs wild turkey management units will be included with each application. The unit was closed because of low Rio Grande turkey numbers and low hunter success. Transplants of Rio Grande turkeys to the unit should bring turkey numbers up and may result in the unit being open to hunting as early as 2001, said Dean Mitchell, Division upland game coordinator. Another change for 1999 is clarification of the Zion unit boundary in southwestern Utah. A description of the Zion unit boundary, that hunters applying for the units hunt are encouraged to read, will be included with each application, Mitchell said. 1998 Hunter Success Those hunting Rio Grande turkeys enjoyed a 63 percent harvest success rate in Utah in 1998, taking 161 Rio Grande turkeys.
