Rogers, geologist from LASR said. By Correspondent Myrna Trauntvein Tunes-New- Juab County Sheriff David Carter received permission from the county commission to begin a search for two used vehicles which are newer and have lower mileage than the vehicles which are growing old in the service. It is better for the county budget if you can get two for less than the price of one, said Ike Lunt, commissioner. It is a good idea to buy used vehicles. Carter said, while the money had originally been in the sheriffs budget, he realized tlie county commission had found it necessary to slash most of the county budgets this year. However, he said, he had managed to find money from grants to aid the sheriffs department with the costs of providing the necessary equipment and manpower for the shut-dow- Bryce Lynn, mayor! said the lower end August 20, said Nila Keyte, town clerk. We have money which will allow us to hire one more deputy to assist with the law enforce- ment contract in the West Desert at the Little Sahara Sand Dunes, said Carter. He said part of the funding came from his contract for services with the Bureau of Land Management who requested the extra help with law enforcement at the facility. I wrote for a grant from Cops Fast and we received the money $75,000 to help us add another officer and purchase a vehicle for the officer to use, said Carter. The BLM contract will provide an extra $25,000 for an officer to assist with law enforcement at the Sand Dunes during the weekends. Carter said the Cops Fast grant money is to cover a vehicle, salary, benefits and equipment for an officer to be used for three and a half years. Computer-aide- d dispatch update will also need to be completed before the year 2,000, said Carter. We will receive a partial grant to help with that. We have to rely, quite heavily, on the search and rescue volunteers, he said. That is true, especially, on the bigger holidays. We need all the help we can get with law enforcement at the Little Sahara Sand Dunes at Easter, for example. The new requirements for those helping with law enforcement activities, said Carter, are that all of those called on to help be a Category 1 Police Officer. A reserve officer and similar trained volunteers cannot be used to help enforce the law or to assist with control. said CartThis caught us AssociaUtah Sheriffs said er. We will just restrict watering lawns and uses like that during the two or three days it takes to make the repairs. I also had Rogers go up and survey the Large Vest Spring to see what can be done up there as far as developing it to produce more water, said Kay. He said the springs were surveyed and some photos of the area were taken. They will come back with some kind of suggestion of what we can do to develop the spring so that it will have a little more water flow. We also toured over into the Clover Creek area and surveyed those springs to get an idea of what we can do to put together a source protection plan for the springs for culinary use, said Kay. He said Rogers would put together some information for the Clover Creek area as well. He also looked at the area where its proposed to drill a well, said Kay. Rogers will put together a plan for that area. All that information will be forthcoming, said Kay. The Boys Ranch, located just outside Mona, will provide some service to the community. The director of the ranch would like the boys to do community service projects to work off community service hours, said Scott Nelson. Nelson is the town secretarytreasurer and is an employee of the Boys Ranch. The boys will be available almost daily from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., he said. They cannot legally operate equipment but can do physical labor. For example, it is easy for them to use shovels as opposed to ride-o-n mowers. Bryce Lynn, mayor, said state law forbade the boys from operating equipment. The sides of the streets need to have tree suckers removed so the weeds at |
