It may be as simple as providing for choice in a dress or shirt for the day or allowing the individual to struggle as he begins to participate in daily care, and not interfering by attempting to help. Because moving to the Care Center can cause some restrictions of usual freedoms of earlier life, we strive very hard to help folks retain their individuality and choices of daily activity. Of course, both at home in care giving and at the Care Center, there are certain restrictions for the safety and well being of our elderly loved ones. Lets all of us remember how we enjoy our freedoms and how we become defensive or aggressive when those freedoms are taken from us. When freedoms are threatened or reduced, we become upset. This can cause us to use specific actions or words to deal with the difficulties we face, and avoid additional loss of freedoms. At any given time, a person has a set of free behaviors to use. Examples of free behaviors are getting up in the morning, making oneself a cup of coffee, reading the paper, and listening to the radio before the workday begins. Whenever threatened with behavior curtailment, a person may respond as if that threat were a barrier to personal freedom. The greater the reaction the more forcefully the individual will respond, in either verbal or physical ways. It must be recognized that g. t |
