Show Page 2 t 'ULimee-ffitf- Nephi, Utah os Wednesday, July 24, 1996 Dear Editor ... Republican Tax increases As a Utahn I am represented primarily by Republicans at all levels of government. These are the folks who routinely rail against taxes and tax increases (especially when there is an elec tion coming up). It is about time these politicians to do more than talk. The property tax assessment notifications that are sent by Juab County should have some sort of warning on the envelope voter initiative such as Californias proposition 13. My under- standing of this law is that your property taxes cannot be increased due to escalating (and possibly transitory) property values. When property is sold, the buyers property taxes may be much higher reflecting the current market value but they will at least know in advance, what they will be and can factor this into their purchase decision. n dont have suggesting that the recipient Utahs to down before want this luxury. sit may conIn the face of the immoral inopening. Dear Editor Tax notices cause alarm By now everyone has received a preliminary Tax Notice. I know this because Dr. Tatton had an influx ofheart attacks at the clinic, and Mike Anderson had to order 100 extra coffins. I paid $36,000 for my house and it has slowly been wearing out since (devaluation andor attrition), like a car wearing out. Now they tell me its worth twice as much, but I cant sell it for $72,000; one bedroom, no basement. Folks, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Wait until 1997,98,99, 2000. In all honesty, we have been enjoying low taxes down here, thats why we live here, there isnt anything down here but the people and the clean air. California had the same thing happen to them. They finally passed Proposition 13 that capped the taxes without a vote. Maybe we need Merril Cook. One thing that puzzles me is the National Inflation Index. It goes up 3.4 every year, our taxes went up over 100 in one year. And no end in sight. My taxes went up last year too. What are they going to do with all this extra revenue? Its not for the new school, it was bonded. The county is going to have several million extra dollars. Will we give it to DeeDee to build a ball park? Our taxes now are as high as Sandy City, Orem, Alpine and Park Citys. Do we enjoy the same amenities? You cant ride a bike on Nephis sidewalks. The only Federal building in town doesnt have wheel chair curb Why dont they consider the condition of the inside in their value formula. I sit on a tomato box. Some (a lot) of homes are so elegant inside you wouldnt believe it. People add on or fix up, and nobody gets a building permit when they do this. Fm not talking about solid oak door frames, tile work, exotic wall covering, patio decks, fire places, brick work, hot tubs, etc. The County Assessor doesnt go inside the homes to determine and gutter. their value. If anybody deserves it, its Phil. To sum it up, Fve just talked about working families, what are old people on fixed income going to do? I hope someone can get Proposition 13 here. We are in more trouble than Yellowstone was.
