Adolescent years is critical time to prevent osteoporosis The critical time window for' preventing osteoporosis occurs in the adolescent years when the bones are being formed, says Dr. Laura Bachrach, associate professor of pediatrics in the division of endocrinology at Stanford Medical Center. During the first three decades of life, between birth and age 29, you lay down in your skeleton the maximum amount of bone mineral that you are ever going to have in your life. You establish your bank account, Bachrach says. And at least half of that probably happens in a very critical period, when you are an adolescent. If a young woman has established a good account by the time that she is finished depositing in her bone bank, she is going to be a lot better prepared for life after 30, which is when the withdrawals start and the potentially crippling deterioration of bone mass is set on course for thousands of women. We all lose bone when we get past 29, Bachrach says. Women lose it more rapidly after menopause, but men lose it too. gtandparenfre of Mary Aagard fcrphe Levan,, and and Du- ane and Helen Anderson of are Nephi. That, says Bachrach, is more than twice the calcium intake of 600 mg consumed by the weight. Although it is fashionable to be thin, fashion may prove unhealthy in the long run because a healthy body mass is required to build healthy bone mass. exerRegular cises the third step include any activity where one works against gravity, from walking and running to jumping rope. The exercise need not be strenuous, Bachrach adds. More gain occurs in going from no exercise to moderate exercise Son born May 30, 1996, to than from moderate exercise to Craig and Rachelle Bryan.
