Show t 31 tje 10 age News and views from your county agent Trees need iron By Jeff Banks Juab County Agent Nothing is mellow about the yellow in your landscape trees and shrubs. They could be starving for lower the soils pH level. Unfortunately, accomplishing this over a wide area is not feasible. An alternative, Koenig says, is to lower the pH in small pockets of soil that are accessible to plant roots. For trees and shrubs, apply a elemental mixture of one-haferrous sulsulfur and fate to holes one to two inches n diameter and 12 to 18 inches deep. A small piece of steel pipe driven into the ground works well for making the holes, he says. Space the holes 18 to 24 inches apart around the drip line of the plant. The drip line is the outermost parameter where water drips from the leaves of a tree. For rows of shrubs or vines, dig a small trench four inches deep approximately 12 inches away from the base of the plant. Fill the bottom of the trench with one inch of the elemental sulfurfer-rou- s sulfate mixture and cover with soil. Water the treated areas well. The elemental sulfur and ferrous sulfate mixture lowers the pH of soil in a small zone around the treatment area and maintains the iron in a form available to plants. Plan roots grow into the treated areas and reach the iron as needed. To prevent iron deficiency from occurring next spring, soil treatments should take place this fall, he says. One soil treatment should last multiple years and is much more convenient than multiple foliar sprays that must be applied during the growing season. lf one-ha- lf iron. If you have noticed plant trees and around your yard with an unusual yellow appearance, iron deficiency is a likely candidate, says Rich Koenig Utah State University Extension soil specialist. If you dont want to see yellow next year, what you do NOW will make all the difference, he says. Heres why: 1- .Utah Soils are alkaline (high in pH). Alkaline soils tie up iron in a form that is unavailable to plants. 2. Cool, wet conditions compound this natural iron deficiency typical of our recent spring weather. 3. Soils low in iron now will be even more deficient this spring. 4. Since iron deficiency begins in the soil, one must treat the soil to get at the root of the problem. Koenig says plants particularly susceptible to iron chlorosis include grape, raspberry, fruit trees, silver maple and many other ornamental trees and shrubs. Symptoms of iron deficiency include yellowing (chlorosis) of leaves on all or part of the plant. As the leaves turn yellow, the ability of the plant to photosyn-thesizor produce food, declines and the plant literally starves, he says. Visual appearance, fruit production and quality and vigor are reduced when plants are iron deficient. In severe cases, or when iron deficiency is a recurring problem, individual limbs or even the entire plant may die, he says. Applying leaf sprays composed of iron chelates can correct iron deficiency. Although effective, this method is only short-teraccording to Koenig. Further-- , more, foliar treatment of a large tree or many, smaller plants can be expensive, and the sprays may have to be applied often throughout the growing season. These products are available at many local farm and garden stores. To help reserve the problem of iron deficiency, concentrate on the soil. Consequently, Utah producers will market more calves at heavier weights but at a lower price this year than in the recent past. Prices this fall will most likely be at or below break-eve- n prices for even our most efficient producers. Break-eve- n prices for the most efficient producers will be around $70cwt. for 500-55- 0 pound steer calves, he says. For producers who want to prepare their steers to enter the feedlot, USU has recently completed an enterprise budget for backgrounding steers. This budget estimates costs on a per head basis. Assuming a 2 pound per day rate of gain, taking 500 pound steers from 500 to 700 pounds would be about: $15 per head for marketing and trucking $78 per head for feed $15 per head in interest costs $13 per head for vet, medicine and death losses $18 per head for labor $10 per head yardage sponsor workshop The Juab County USU Extension Service and the Family Home Economics & Family Life Advisory Council will sponsor a workshop entitled Putting Your Yard to Bed for the Winter, Thursday, September 28th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cultural Hall, Juab County Center.
