To prove this belief, LOOK at these values Sportsman need to look at the facts on area game To the Editor Before we grab our guns and head for the hills to blast any fox, coyote, and mountain lion we see. Id like to suggest we look at some facts. Blaming an unsuccessful deer hunt on too many predators is an oversimplification of reality. The balance of the surrounding ecosystem is so dynamic and intricate that one cannot attribute a fluctuation of a population to one single factor. The problem cannot be fixed by exterminating one species. Studies show that predator populations fluctuate in proportion to prey populations. If it is true that cougar numbers are up in relation to their food source, then their population will regulate itself without the intervention of trigger happy sportsmen. One of the most serious problems the deer face is the loss of their winter range. Since the coming of the pio agreement both parties recognize that each has a vested interest in the delivery of CUP project water to their respective service areas and that it is to their mutual benefit to work together to accomplish this common goal. 'We are moving ahead with the planning stage," said Juab County neers, humans have settled in the valleys and have competed with the grazing macrofauna. In our own area, agriculture, houses, roads, golf courses, and Interstate 15 now cover historical deer wintering habitat. Obviously, this competition is going to have an effect on the health of the deer population. One step toward the solution of the alleged low deer numbers is to collect scientific data. The DWR has no trend data for deer or cougar populations in the area. The intelligent thing to do would be to work with Division biologists and gather accurate data concerning the true numbers of the populations in question. Only then should decisions, based on fact instead of emotion and misinformation, be made concerning changes in the ecosys- tem. The public needs to realize their support is vital to keep the project on track, Said Young.
