Although the overall pheasant count is down throughout Utah, pheasant chick populations are up in some areas. In fact, according to upland game biologist Dean Mitchell, production is the best in the last 10 years. But youll have to be persistent to find them. The best areas this year will be the Cache Valley, Uin for a seat in region County around Utah Lake. Another option for hunters is posted hunting units. Private landowners permit hunters to work these fields if they get permission. Also, try some of the Divisions wildlife management areas like the new Bud Phelps area near Logan. Remember to buy your upland game habitat stamp before you go afield. 7. . . In the Utah study the mean age at diagnosis for cases was 65.4 years; the mean age for controls was 64.8 years. For men, the mean exposure to s cigarettes was 60.9 in cases who smoked and 35.9 pack-year- s in controls who smoked. "This is unconscionable considering our documentation . that person who starts smoking after age 20 cuts his or her lung cancer risk by more than half," stressed a Lyon. "We have proved we can reduce the risk by restricting access." Lyon emphasized what both physicians and the public already know: "No one should begin smoking at all, period." And that's the message he wants to be remembered by teens (especially the increasing number of young women who are taking up the habit), par- .ents, counselors and other adults who are in positions to influence today's youth..,., ' : ...from page 8 Parent-teach- er placed in a box for a drawing. Gean or replace the filter. A clogged filter restricts the flow of heated air fro n your furnace through the duct work to the rest of your home. The result is your furnace works harder but delivers less heat where it's needed. 2. Check the blower belt and oil the motor. Loose belts can increase furnace operating time. Replace frayed or cracked belts. Two a. three drops of oil in the motor will keep it running smoothly. (Sealed blower motors require no lubrication. If you have questions, check your owner's manual or call a heating professional. Make sure blcwer doors are replaced properly. This keeps combustion byproducts separate from the warm air circulated through your home. 3. Check to see that warm air ducts are unobstructed. 4. Check to see that the venting system is clear of obstructions and in good condition from the furnace to the roof cap with all connections securely fastened. 5. Remove all flammable objects from around your furnace (and water heater) and give it a test run. If you have questions about preparing your natural gas furnace for winter, or to arrange for an annual inspection, call your heating contractor, contact the Rocky Mountain Gas Association at for a free contractor referral, or look in your telephone directory.
