The Sunshine Law stipulates, in order to provide protection for. citizens, that no item not on the official agenda can be acted upon at public lf meetings. Arlene Shook, spokesperson for the group, asked the council to recognize friends, neigh Dear Editor... bors, and constituents of different ages, occupations, and circumstances. "I ask you to listen as good fathers should listen." Mayor Robert Steele said, "it would be great to hear from some new people or to hear some new evidence." He said much of the material had been rehashed. His concern was seconded by Richard Paxman and Milton Harmon, council members. Harmon said the remarks of the citizens had been recognized and acknowledged at the proper public hearings and had been entered in the record the state would review in the School shouldnt he for selling an education, not to be master salesmen. To the Editor After seeing the latest project for the elementary school students to raise money for the school, I felt it necessary to voice my feelings on this. First of all, I think that it is misleading to the children to think they can win prizes by the amount of goods they sell, when they must sell somewhere between 20 and 35 items to win anything worth taking home. Whose feelings should they hurt? Second, they were told to sell only to family members, not to go door to door. However, many of the students did. I think that this is a dangerous thing for children to be doing. All students in each class were told to sell six items, which entitled the class to have a pizza party. How many students can sell six items in their families? What about the larger families who have more Lets not deceive the children with this type of project in the attempt to raise money. Newton said another disagreement had been that the city thought Sheriff Carter or a representative should come to council meetings and give a report of the work they had done in the community. Carter said he had not been making the reportings because it was not in the contract. However, he had begun making the quarterly reports at council meetings as the council desired. "I've never had a conver- sation with the commission nor with Mayor Young about the contract or whether the town should or shouldn't pay," said Newton. "Nothing was ever said by me to any of them."
