Show Kathy's Corner Television: The by Kathy Riggs USU Extension Home Economist Television has been called the chewing gum for the eyes and the plugin drug. The potential for abuse among children and adults alike the fact that it is so easy lies in to sit down and allow ourselves Kathy Riggs to be entertained. The solution probably is not to banish the TV set from the house. Adults and children alike need to learn to be responsible consumers of TV, and the best place to learn is at home. Dr. Thomas Lee, USU Extension specialistinhumanandfam-il- y development, says many stud-"- , ies have focused on how violence and aggressive behavior on TV influences childrens own violent or aggressive behavior. If your child seems to be more aggressive than other children, you may have a child who is especially vulnerable to violence and ag drug plug-i- n erything you see on TV. By connecting things from everyday life to what they see on TV, children begin to think about how this relates to the real world and helps them develop a mental filter" that they can use to screen what they see on TV. Television can lead to wanting to learn more about something, read more about it, or do something. The TV world is not real. This is obvious, but children under 7 are less able to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Even adults can be fooled. One way to help children begin to realize this is to talk back" to the TV. Say things like, Did the music make you feel nervous when the bad guy came on? or I wonder why we never see Cosby having to go to work. It takes a lot of money to live like they do. The goal is to make children a little more skeptical ofwhat they see. Dont do this constantly. Nobody likes their show interrupted, but make some comments, and then let it sink in for gression seen even in cartoons. TV commercials also are very effective in determining what brands children prefer. With the holidays approaching, many par- ents already may be frustrated that their children are wishing for what theyve seen advertised on TV. Although one ofthe most widely held beliefs is that TV interferes with school performance, a moderate amount of viewing seems to be positive depending on the type of prowhile heavier amounts gram are negative. Despite all the findings on the negative effects of TV, Dr. Lee reminds us that parents can influence their childrens reaction to TV especially in limiting the amount and type of television programming and challenging the messages TV is sending. Even watching a poor show can be a learning experience if you are involved with your child. There are five things you can teach your children about television that willhelp them be media literate.
