Show From page one "FroniWhere Nephi City Council news notes I Sit" By Allan R. Gibson I Richard Paxman feels the city has an inconsistent policy on charging for culinapr water. He thinks that those living outside the city limits who get city culinary water should pay more for the water. Learned from Mayor Steele that Nephi Enterprises has $3,000 they would like to contribute toward the cost of a new sign for the industrial park. Heard that Don Eyre, Jr., city attorney, has spent some time in Levan with an inspector from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigating an industrial accident. He was concerned that Nephi City should be in compliance with the law. Another gentleman stopped to let me know his viewpoint on the annexation of South Utah County. As a local political figure, he was concerned that all the ramifications of such a move hadnt been explored. I told him that I would pass his concerns along to the powers to be. So be it Also please read the letter to the editor in this weeks paper on another viewpoint. A funny thing happened in our house on Wednesday last week. When I got home from work, Mariann told me that the TV was acting up. Just what I need, I thought, oh well, its still under warranty. I fiddled with the knobs, pulled the power for a minute to reset the internal computer, but nothing seemed to help. The picture looked as it does when the cable companys descramblers go haywire, rather crazy with lines here and there. Mariann said, The cat threw up on the back. Do you think that might be the problem. On sh.J I quickly turned the TV off, looked up on top in the back and right in the middle of the ventilation slots was a pile of half digested cat food mixed with cat digestive juices dripping onto the electronics of that TV. I quickly called Mike Davis, the TV man and told him the problem. Mike came over and suggested that the set be transported to his shop where he could clean out the inside. I, being the inquisitive type, asked Mike if such things were covered by the warranty. He laughed and said that he was sure that Cat Puke wasnt covered. I already knew, but what the heck, it doesnt hurt to ask. Anyway, after Mike cleaned off the Cat Puke and dried out the circuit board, the set was returned to working order. I only tell you this story because if your cat is like our cats, you too will find Tabby or Samantha curled up on the top of your TV sucking up that warmth. Brush her off and Cat proof your TV or you might be the next to be struck with Cat Puke in your TV. We had a great time in St. George at the Utah Press Annual Winter Convention last weekend. The weather was rainy but a lot warmer than it was when we left home. Little did I know that Mariann and Adrian Taylor, publisher of the Moab had been at work for the past month or so. On Saturday Morning I went down to the Past Presidents breakfast and was overwhelmed when I found out much to my surprise that I had been selected as this years recipient of the Utah Press Associations Master Editor and Publishers Award. Its the highest award given to a member of the association and I was overwhelmed. More so I guess, because it was given to my father Roy E. Gibson in 1976 and my Uncle Abe was the first recipient of this award in 1960. For those of you that dont know me very well, after wearing suit jackets for over 6 years at Harrahs I was very pleased not to wear them. I very seldom don a jacket except when I must! On Saturday morning I went down for my eye opener cup and to read the paper in my usual shirt sleeves. About 8:15, Mariann showed up caring my suit jacket She made an excuse about did I forget it, or something. I promptly said no and before going to the meeting I returned it to our room. Gentlemen take heed. When your wife suggests you do something its probably because she knows something you dont. Times-Indepen-de- I was kidding Ann Denise Robinson about it being her fault that it rained in St. George over the weekend, but one of our speakers took the blame! Jackie Nokes of the Utah State Fair, one of our speakers on Friday, said that the rain followed her to St. George and it would leave when she did. And it did for the rest of that day. With that in mind the resolutions committee suggested that the Gov. make Ms. Nokes the state official Rain Maker. Could it be that our recommendation was taken at face value and the Gov. has had Nokes flying all over the state this last week. Whatever th reason, the recent rain is welcome. If it keeps up for a while Pat Painter might just have some to jet boat on this summer. . The request is reviewed, and the council. He was told that they will be done as soon the roads are dry enough to work on. He also asked about the citys curb and gutter policy. He learned that the city cuts the grade, prepares the pad, and will blacktop to the curb after the curb and gutter are in place. Theyre of in the process of putting us in debt for more than $2 million to build a new jail without establishing a need for it. Who makes the inside bucks in this new streamlined form of government? George Orwell would be amazed at how well he anticipated the events in 1984 and beyond. Indeed, right here in Juab County we have classic big brother bloated bureaucracy, cronyism, double speak, and no speak. I think that our commissioners are decent men with honorable intentions. Since they have just reorganized, we can hope to see a new emphasis on service to the citizens of Juab County. I think they should understand that their engineer and administrator works for Uintah Engineering, and his job is to make them money. Hes doing rather well at it. What do you think? We also would see a further disintegration of Juab Countys ability to focus on its governmental responsibilities. While Utah County leaders were peeved at our leaders lack of diplomacy in passing their resolution, we citizens of Juab County should be concerned that the resolution was passed so precipitously without knowledge or information as to the possible effects on Juab County. It is symptomatic of the shortsightedness with which we are being governed. The lengths to which our leaders will go to do everybodys jobs but their own is patently offensive. They have hired an expert from out of town (the county engineer and administrator) to do their jobs. So anyway, we have this engineer and administrator running Juab County.
