Show News, views from your county agent About your thermostat by Jeff Banks USU Extension Agent An integral part of your furnace is your thermostat. It is the brain Of your heating system and deserves just as thorough a checkup as your furnace gets before the cold season settles in. First, consider the location of your thermostat. It should never be mounted on a perimeter wall or near a supply register where the warm air flows into the room, says Stephen E. Poe, Utah State University Extension energy specialist. Relocating a thermostat is not difficult. You can buy thermostat .wire at any or electrical-suppl- y store. Next, check the thermostat settings. Thats something that has the possibility of being out of adjustment just because of the amount of handling the thermostat can get, said Poe. heating-equipme- Remove the cover and inspect the key components. You want to turn up the thermostat set knob until the setting corresponds with that on the thermostats thermometer. Use a standard thermometer for a comparison to make sure the thermostats thermometer ie working correctly, he said. At this point, the mercury switch should trip or the con tacts in the thermostat should close. Double check by turning the heater on and listening for the familiar rumble of the burner igniting, says Poe. If the actual temperature at which the heating unit is ac- tivated differs by more than two degrees from the indicator set- ting, the thermostat should be adjusted, he says. Also, check to see if the thermostat is level. It cannot slope if it is to be accurate. You can check for this by placing a spirit level across the base of the thermostat with the cover removed. For round thermostats, place the spirit level on the pegs or pins provided near the center of the unit. If the thermostat is cocked even a little bit, it will give you a false reading, Poe says.
