Many of the early soft drinks contained significant amounts of cocoa leaf extract (from which also comes cocaine) and kola nut extract a potent stimulant. Todays soft drinks do not contain these drugs, but caffeine still remains in many. Just what is caffeine and how does it affect the body? Caffeine is a power stimulant of the central nervous system. The drug increases the flow of thought and fights fatigue. It also stimulates the heart to beat faster and dilates arteries to in-- : crease blood flow. Urine production is increased as is the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. . r A dose of about 10 grams of caffeine can be fatal, but no deaths are known to have been caused by it.
