Show w :j Serving East luab County M.iv i'- -. A Nice Place to Live! 1mo At Monday meeting b Commission rezones county to retain 'prime' agricultural land After interrupting their regular meeting for a public hearing on the matter, the Juab County commissioners adopted two ordinances limiting residential subdivisions to the fringes of East Juab's heartland of prime farm ground. One ordinance redraws the boundaries of the farmland, or A related docuthat zoned ment lists permitted uses of the A-- l land. The complete text of both documents appears in the legal notices section of this newspaper. The marginal land, totaling roughly 20,000 acres and located on either side of the core of more than 200,000 acres of fields, has been designated RA-- (residential A-- l. 1 agricultural). All three commissioners, R. Rcscoe Garrett, Joe Bernini, and Max K. Williams, were in attendance, as were county clerk Loree C. Memmott and county attorney Donald J. Eyre Jr. Harlow Pexton, chairman of the county planning and zoning committee, Nephi mayor Leon Pexton, and county assessor Tom Fowkes attended the public hear- ing, along with two area residents. Our thinking was to reserve the prime agricultural land," the elder Pexton said. Overall, he said, The people who actually owned the land were for this move. However, the planner and zoner said, some real estate agents had opposed the plan. One- - and dwellings will continue to be allowed on the A-- l land, which stretches from Utah the County line on the north to the Levan area. The homesites must still meet county acreage minimums. However, the use ordinance reads, residential subdivisions shall not be permitted in the A-- l agricultural zone. Some other permitted uses of A-- l land include, besides the obvious farming uses, the establishment of cemeteries, golf courses, two-famil- railroads, stadiums, mental and penal institutions, and oil wells. The ordinance also provides for other similar uses ruled by the Board of County Commissioners after recommendations by the planning commission to be in harmony with the objectives and characteristics of this zone. Mayor Pexton asked that the words, including public airbe in the sentence inserted ports allowing public buildings, and this was done. Pexton stud he requested the addition of the words so there would never be any Memorial Day services set at city cemeteries Vernon Butler, commander of Post No. 1 of the American Legion, has announced the time of Memorial Day services at the two Nephi cemeteries, Monday, May 26. White crosses, honoiing the community's war dead, will be placed in the American Legion plot by the Vine Bluff Cemetery flagpole. check. Sheriff Robert L. Painter visited the meeting to propose that a security fence be constructed on the north side of the public safety building so certain, jail windows could be opened. He said the open windows would allow better ventilation in the jail during warm periods. Commission chairman Garrett said he liked the idea of a fence, as it would also establish an exercise yard. He asked the sheriff to do some further checking on materials and costs. Bud Crane of Trace Energy Co. sought an oil lease on about 329 acres of county ground.
