Byron Poppy Day is Saturday in Nephi Pexton has proclaimed Saturday, May 17 as Poppy Day in Nephi. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary will be selling poppies that day. Proceeds from the poppy sales will be used to help disabled veterans. According to the legion, the poppy is the memorial flower for American war dead. The veterans returning from World War I remembered the poppies which lined the battlefields of France and Flanders, and the soldiers came to look upon this flower as a living symbol of their dead comrades sacrifice. Mayor Pexton said that by wearing a poppy on Poppy Day, each American can assist the living and honor the sacrifices made by our servicemen. Mayor W. Leon com-panie- s, Sheriff Robert Painter says the companies usually prey on older people. They may offer several services, from roof painting, to tree trimming, to cleaning septic tanks. They may actually do the work, but sometimes bill the persons for higher costs than what they quoted. A gang worked in this area last year doing roof painting. They charged from $150 to $400 to do a roof. The paint they used was a mixture of water and kerosene. A mixture like that can make a home a fire bomb, says Nephi Julie Wright. Council decides to reconstruct city float It appeared for a time last Wednesday night that Nephi City would not have a float to enter in the various parades of the summer of 1980. The float "crisis surfaced during the regular city council meeting attended by all and Leon Pexton, the new mayor. Councilman Ernest Wilson, who oversees the maintenance of the citys float, said it would take about $1,000 to make the vehicle presentable. He said last years repairs cost about $850, but the float was really in bad shape at present and needed more work than it did in 1979. coun-cilme- n Three councilmen, Paul McPherson, Earl Jarrett, and Bob Garrett voted not to fund the project. Mayor Pexton then stepped in and said, I know this is not one of our favorite projects, but he said he could visualize public response if there were no city float and that the vision was not a pleasant one. Finally, Councilman Jarrett put his vote in the yes column with Wilson and Bob Councilmen Steele and the float was saved. The council also met with two men from the architectural firm of Dell Ashworth and Associates to discuss the renovation of the old Juab High School vocational building into city office space. The council viewed plans which showed how the architect proposed to utilize space in the building to meet various city needs. Painter suggests that area citizens approached by contractors contact local government authorities to see if the firms have legitimate business licenses. Do a little checking to see if they are reputable, Painter says. Manning agrees. Anyone approached by persons to paint their roof or to do any painting or remodeling should verify with city hall that they have a license, he said. He also said that if there is any doubt as to the contractors' honesty, to call the police to investigate the company. Most contractors are more than happy to talk with the police. The areas citizens should not hesitate to call us. Give them no money until the company is verified as a reputable firm," Manning said.
