The Utah Department of Transportation opened bids Tuesday for the section. The apparent low bidder was Rick Jensen Construction, Inc. of Draper with a $925,286 total. The official engineers estimate for the job was $993,330. The work requires placing a four-inclayer of bituminous surface course on top of the existing roadway followed by a bituminous seal coat. The sealer is much finer and gummier than the regular roadbase, and for that reason it has greater durability and smoother driving qualities. The project wil also entail paving the on and off ramps on that and upgrading the portion of turnmaintenance existing arounds. Shoulder flattening is also planned to improve the safety of the emergency lanes. The project should produce only minimal traffic interference. Many traffic control devices will be used and only one lane at a time can be blocked off to traffic. The truck burned eight miles south of Nephi on Sunday, causing about $3,700 in damages. Boyd Howarth of the Nephi City fire department said that one of several cans of fuel in the rear of the truck may have ignited. The tractor belonged to Merle McPherson. It had been turned off while the operator went to lunch. Upon returning to the field west of the fairgrounds, the driver saw smoke and called the fire department. When the door to the cab was opened, flames erupted. They had just pulled one truck out from under one of the trailers and were getting ready to pull in the Woolf tractor when the 40,000-lb- . trailer sank through the asphalt.
