Gibson Juab Students place in Sterling Scholar program Juab School received three awards at the first annual Sterling Scholar Awards program held last Thursday at Richfield High School. Steven Greenhalgh, Daryl Gibson and Tony Worwood will each receive $100 for their accomplishments in the competition. The checks will be presented at Juab High Schools awards assembly on May 16. Juab and Piute high schools were the only two schools of the ten competing who did not produce a first-plac- e winner. Gunnison Valley High School garnered first honors with three winners, and Manti and Richfield high school students received two awards for each school. The prizes won by Juab were in the categories of English and Literature; Speech, Drama, and Science. Coordinator for the program was Mrs. Elaine Bowles, school librarian. Prize money totaling $4800 will be winners and presented to the thirty-si- x runners-up- . Contributions from Nephi were made by the Ute Stampede Committee, the First Security Bank, and the Juab County Commission. High runner-u- p "Vx. Tony Woreood Show Times changed A change in times of shows has been announced by Richard Foote, manager of the Venice Theatre. Starting this week with the showing of Walt Disneys The Worlds Greatest Athlete on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, show times will be 7:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday evenings only, two performances will be shown, at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., and through the remainder of the week, only one showing, starting at 7:30 p.n)., is on the ilendar, Mr. Foote stated. Under 25, Single? Try out for Miss Nephi contest Nephis unmarried girls from 17 to 25 years of age will have a chance to become Miss Nephi, at the contest to be held on Saturday May 19. The contest is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. in the Juab High School auditorium. All A Family You Should Know Weather permitting, the annual Nephi City cleanup day will be conducted Saturday, May 5, according to Ned Worthington, president of the Nephi Chamber of Commerce, sponsoring organization. With the cooperation of Nephi City, Juab County, the Utah National Guard, and Nephis civic club, any trash that cannot be transported by home owners will be picked up during the day. Men and equipment will be working in each area of the community during Saturday. Byron Wilkey, Nephi, is the new bishop of the ward. Bishop Wilkey replaces Bishop Milton T. Harmon, who served as bishop for six years. The establishment of a Congressional Intern program for college students of the Second Congressional District was announced recently by Utahs freshman Congressman, Wayne Owens. The program will be conducted on a rotational basis in cooperation with all institutions of higher education in the Second Congressional District. Residents of the district attending colleges outside the district are also eligible to participate, according to Rep. Owens. It was indeed a pleasure to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Sampson and their three boys earlier this week, and to get to know them a little better. The Brady Bunch on television has nothing over on Mr. and Mrs. Sampson, for she, Mrs. Sara Woolf K. Sampson and he, Ben Sampson, brough their own families together in a second marriage for each, in 1936. And to the members of the two families, they have two of theirs to make a total of nine children, with only three remaining at home. Mr. Sampson is a native of our Della, and education there, neighboring community, following completion of completed studies at Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, returning to the campus as a teacher. Following several years there, he resided for 15 years at Cliatsworth and Beaumont, California, and moved to Nephi in August of 1972 where he founded Mt. Nebo Foods, Inc. "Were grateful for our move to Utah Mr. Sampson noted, and expressed continued enthusiastic faith in the future of the company. Active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints, Mr. Sampson served most recently as first counselor in the Palm Springs Stake Presidency, and prior to that time had served as a counselor in a bishopric and a branch at Banning, California, lie was an instructor in chemistry, mathematics, and economics at the San Jacinto College at Gilman Hot Springs, California. He is exceedingly grateful to the people of this area for being received well in the community. Mrs. Sampson was Sara Woolf, born and raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She is an y Please turn to page two Lomax dies, funeral held in Salt Lake City Funeral services were conduted in Salt Lake City last week for Roy Thomas Lomax, 66, former resident of Nephi. He was a brother of Claude R. Lomax. M. . Lomax was born February 5, 1907 at Nephi, a son of Robert and Lydia Crawley Lomax. He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of American Legion Post 71. For many years, Mr. Lomax was supply sergeant of Battery 3, 145th Field Artillery, at Nephi. He married Erma Lunt, and they later were divorced. He married Kay Mecham March 19, 1948 at Salt Lake City. He is survived by his widow, Salt Lake City; a son and a daughter: Gary T. Lomax, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Lewis (Rose Marie) Knudson, Brigham City. Also surviving are five step children; brothers and sisters: Claude R. Lomax, Nephi; Elmo W. Lomax, Clinton; S. Dee Lomax, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Glen W. (Bessie) Schofield, Fremont, California; Mrs. Lester W. (Maurine) Ford, Reno, Nevada and Mrs. Robert V. (Marjorie) Seeley, Bountiful. Julia, a 1967 graduate of Juab High1 School, where she was active in Drama and the Provita, as well as many other high school functions, is also a graduate of Brigham Young University, where she majored in public relations and communications. According to Ned Worthington, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Basically, the privilege of check cashing in stores is being abused by a small percentage of customers, but this small percentage is costing the stores large sums of money. The policy adopted is the one instituted by the Utah Retail Grocers Association. To cash a personal check, a store patron must have a Utah Drivers license with a picture plus one of the following: A Major Credit Card, a Bank Courtesy Card, or a Company or Military I. D. The patron may also cash a check if he has a store check cashing card. Payroll and Government checks must have the store managers OK, and can not be cashed on Sundays or Holidays or after 6:00 p.m. Monday Through Saturday. Amounts on personal checks are limited to the amount of purchase plus $5.00. These checks are listed as unaccepta able: Two-part- y personal checks, d checks those post-dateor checks, or older than 30 days, counter checks, personal loan, finance company or insurance checks, income tax refund checks, or money orders. They replace A. Dean Shaw and Larry Broadhead. Fenton Broadhead was retained as financial clerk and Neils Jensen was made ward clerk, a position that Bishop Wilkey had held. Don Reid was retained as the wards executive secretary. The reorganization was done under the direction of Golden R. Mangelson, Preisdent of Juab Stake. Glaucoma clinic draws 350 individuals were tested for Glaucoma symptoms at the Lions Club-Utasociety for the Prevention of Over 350 h Blindness evening. Thirty-thre- e clinic conducted Friday individuals were referred by the clinic to their private physicians for further examination and possible treatment for the disease, according to Jay C. Mickelson of the Nephi Lions Club, clinic arrangements chairman. Mr. Mickelson stated that the Lions Clubs of Nephi, Mona, and Levan, as well as the Society, are grateful for the assistance given by many at the clinic. Three Family Relations specialists from Utah State University will conduct a series of lectures on family-relate- d topics at a seminar to be held next Tuesday in Nephi. The Seminar, sponsored by the Utah State University Extension service and the Juab Stake MIA, will be for both youth and adults, and will consist of three different programs. The first program in the seminar, aimed at youth between the ages of 12 and 14, is entitled Talking, Listening, and UnderThe second in the series is standing. called Growing Toward Marriage, and is for youth 15 years of age and older. The final session, entitled Creating a Successful Family is for married per- sons. The classes will be taught be three specialists from Utah State University: Glen Jensen, family and child development specialist from USUs Extension Service; Dr. C. J. Skidmore from the Department of Family and Child Development; and Robert Turner, a graduate student in Family Relations. The seminar will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at the Juab Stake Center. The session for married persons will be held at 8:30 p.m. that same evening. The Juab Stake MIA Presidencies and Donna Sparks, Utah State University extension agent, invite the public to attend. The seminar is free of charge, it was announced. Immunization clinic set A second immunization plinic sponsored by the Juab County Health Department will be held at the Nephi Elementary School on Wednesday, May 9, it was announced today. The clinic w ill be held from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., and Juab County Health Department officials invite the public to take advantage of this clinic. Health Department officials say that all immunizations offered in the previous clinic will be available. gains Silver Beaver award Elden C. Sherwood, chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, was awarded a Silver Beaver award at the annual Fellowship banquet of the Utah National Parks Council held last week at Provo. Mayor Sherwood has been district chairman for some 15 years, and prior to that time was active in scouting for several additional years.
