HI FOLKS, ONLY MORE WEEKS TO SHOP FOR Cash Register V Saits Speaalist i ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (ANF) The strangest things can happen to you when youre in the Army. It was no exception recently in Baltimore, enlisted man stepped into when an one of the citys book stores. The unusual sequence of events began when Sp4 David A. Newton of Company C, Staff and Faculty Battalion, U.S. Army Ordnance Center and School at Aberdeen Proving Ground, entered the store and noted about 15 persons browsing inside. Also doing a bit of browsing himself, Specialist Newton noticed a complete lack of clerks in the store and that customers were leaving money on the counter and walking out. As Specialist Newton put it, As more and more money began to pile up on the counter, I realized that it could disappear at the hands of some unscrupulous person so I went over and rang it up on the cash register. Customer after customer left the store handing the soldier their money, which he promptly rang up on the register. Still no clerk could be found and Specialist Newton decided he was in a strange position as a sudden book store operator and called the police. An officer noted Specialist Newtons" business-lik- e touch and told him to keep running the store until a representative of the store could be located. No one could be found and the store was locked up and closed. Why was the store open in the first place ? The door was unlocked so everyone just walked in, Specialist Newton ex- plained. Back on duty as a small arms instructor store clerk the next week, the soldier-boo- k received a call from the womens group that operates the store. The ladies wanted to meet him. Possibly they wanted to say thanks to an honest soldier who did what he thought had to be done.
